Really what good would Everett Golson do for any team?

May 11, 2015, 4:31 PM

Now I am not calling out Everett Golson. He was a good QB for Notre Dame in 2014. He was decent in 2012. However, someone assumes that if he is signed to any of the teams mentioned (South Carolina, Georgia, FSU) he will be the first option. I just don't see it.

Let's just stick with logistics. He would be a first year player for each of these teams. He would be learning a completely new system in June. He would have minimum to zero time to become acclimated to the team or players. As the starting QB, he would need to be ready for those teams on opening day. Here are those schedules:

South Carolina vs. Carolina in Charlotte
Georgia vs. UL-Monroe in Athens
Florida St vs. Texas State in Tallahassee

Now those all look like cupcake scenario (with the exception of South Carolina/UNC. I see UNC winning 84-77 where both defenses say "whatever" by the end of the first quarter). So picture, if you will, a QB that was "good" at Notre Dame coming into these match-ups with little to no prep time in the off-season. Given that Georgia is replacing WRs, South Carolina only has one receiver, and Florida St. finding a new boundary receiver, a close game against any of these teams would lead spectators, fans, alumni, and student body to wonder if the rewards will outweigh the risk. Also, in fairness, two of the three teams mentioned have QBs that have some playing time and are capable (South Carolina's Connor Mitch and FSU's Sean Maguire). If these are the "future" of your programs, are you basically telling them their work won't equate? And when do you go to them if and when Golson struggles?

Finally, if you have been keeping score, Golson would have zero experience to the system. Now how would that stack up to Deshaun Watson and his outstanding freshmen campaign? I can point out several things but it all comes down to experience. Deshaun played in the same system all through high school and it came to semantics at Clemson; the same play at one school called something different at the other. Golson would be learning a completely different scheme at each school. Meaning he would be retraining his mentality in a completely new system. Watson had a spring to learn the new names to same plays. Golson would be learning new names to new plays with less time and as I said at the top of this:

I don't think Golson was good for ND in 2014

He was responsible for like 20 turnovers.

Call me crazy, but we could have used him last year at times. I'm sure there are a number of teams that could benefit from having him on their roster in a very solid and experienced backup role, if not as a starter. There are holes in his game for sure, but he puts pressure on defenses just by stepping under center. He does not have an elite arm, but he can get it downfield and his athleticism is very respectable. I agree that having only a limited time with a team would make it difficult, but he could help some teams out without question.

Spurrier ruins QB's at SCAR. Only Shaw was able to survive.

I wouldn't waste my time there only to get screwed at the end.

I can see he and Pharoh Cooper together in the back field

running "the spur" or some form of wildcat. That's about it.

Very, Very Excited. Very, Very Proud.

If he's more talented than what

You currently have then he will help. He can come in during the 1st session of summer school and work out with the team. Most teams have seven on seven drills running their play book all summer run by the players. Watson is trying to get cleared by the doctor so he can practice with the this summer.

Russell Wilson was able to transfer to Wisconsin from NC State after graduation and start for them and lead them to the Rose Bowl, now he's far more talented than Golson.

For the Capons.....

having the option of going with a QB who has actual game experience albeit in a completely different offense, may be the better scenario compared to being saddled with a QB who only had limited mop-up duty type experience against Furman.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

How would the same QB who played last year be an upgrade? It's the same person.

You're pretty stupid, aren't you?

Summa cum laude. Magna cum laude. The radio’s too loudy.
