Questions about Clemson basketball . . .

Jan 27, 2014, 12:39 PM

1. Why are we perennially a mid/lower pack team? What are the reasons? We have had a few years here and there where we have finished in the top tier, but historically, we must be the worst team in the ACC.

2. Are you okay with that? Have you just come to accept it as something that will never change?

3. If that can change, what must be done, what can we do to make it happen? I'm not talking about competing every single year for the title like UNC/Dook/Syracuse/Loiusville etc. (that would be great); I'm just talking about consistently being better than we ever have been and finishing above mid-pack most years.

4. If it can change - are we close now? Or are we still a long ways off?

very beginning of ACC hoops that we were not going to expend a lot of money, time, or effort on basketball at Clemson.

This was a conscious decision by the fellow credited (rightly so) with laying the foundation for our football success.

But, for three entire decades Frank Howard, the football coach was not all that capable as Frank Howard the Athletic Director ... and our hoops struggles today are the fruit of that situation.

You don't dig a 30 year hole and then dig out of it very quickly or easily.

1. We have some serious inherent recruiting issues. High School basketball in South Carolina is terrible, and if we have to rely on South Carolina talent, it takes them a while to develop. We have to go into places like North Carolina and Georgia and recruit kids that North Carolina schools have all ready passed on. Same with Georgia, we don't compete in Atlanta, so we are picking up scraps that we have to coach up.

2. No, I think this can change. I don't think we will ever be elite, but if we can have consistency in our program I think we can be midlevel with occasional top 5 flare ups when the right type of talent is mixed with experience. This requires patience, which is in short supply at Clemson.

3. Again, it goes back to program consistency. You can't change coaches every 5-7 years. You need a coach who is in it for the long haul and has a solid program developed. Teams want to know how a mid major team like Butler competes...this is how, consistency in a program eliminates the huge drop offs,.

4. I think we are probably 2 seasons away from being consistently upper/mid pack, while competing with the big boys at home or on the road....if we don't blow the entire thing up and start over.

Your last reason is the key

can't blow it up. Clemson is a school that has to invest in a person, a coach, as coaches are the face of college basketball. We actually did that with Purnell, paid him very well, and he bolted for whatever reason. He's richer, and about to be retired. We have to do the same with Brownell. People can talk all they want about this being year 4 but we went from one extreme style of play to the complete opposite. That means we have to give this coach the time to establish his system. He's just now doing that with his players. This year has been better in spite of last week. Next year will continue that trend and we should continue to see the upward trend. I've always said Clemson could be like Virginia was under Terry Holland. Holland's teams became a competitive force, and then got that one great player in Sampson, and had an elite run. They were good before and after Ralph, and we can be as well. And if it so happens you get a stud, then you can have an elite stretch

I have not been close with Clemson basketball until Brownell came. At Clemson it does appear football is king. Not necessarily a bad thing. Every year for at least one game, and this year two, large amounts of seats are given to football players and recruits that do not want to be there to start with. Then they leave by half time. This does not have to happen. I hope with the renovation of LJ more students are around the court. Also, I believe you have to get lucky a couple of years before a big name or 4-5 player comes.
