Question: Who would replace Dabo as head coach?
1

|
I want Dabo to be our coach until he decides to retire or run for President - whichever comes first. When either of these scenarios occur our AD has his list - who would be on your list?
Thoughts ... do they have to be a former Tiger? Head coaching experience? Dabo connection?
I offer three candidates to start the conversation: CJ Spiller, Hunter Renfrow, Jeff Scott

I think if Dabo suddenly retired at the end of this year...

Venables, Garrett Riley, and Napier would be 3 strong candidates.
Realistically, I think Dabo stays at minimum 8 more years at Clemson (likely longer). Who the heck knows at that point who would be your top guys.

I would bet that currently , Dabo has a succession plan in

place. But, as Granny Holtz knows all too well, succession plans only work if you leave your school of your own volition, in good standing. It was his desire to have Skippy take over for him at USuk, but the Coots soured on Skippy, so Holtz pulled a drunk rabbit out of his hat in Steve Spurrier.
Jeff Scott would probably right now be a choice that wouldn't raise a lot of hackles. Butt, in reality, Jeff failed miserably in his only Head Coaching gig, at least as far as wins on the field. And at Clemson, "moral" victories won't cut it.
Somebody mentioned Napier. I just think that one is a nonstarter. Just my opinion.
Garrett Riley is certainly one of the hottest, if not THE hottest Flavor of the Month right now. But would he succeed in as high level a job as Clemson as his very first Head Coaching gig? I think it all depends on how much knowledge he has absorbed, and been willing to absorb and adapt from all his previous stops as an assistant. Just remember, Dabo himself had never even BEEN a coordinator when he got the Clemson job, and he has succeeded fairly well, I do believe.

The next Head Coach probably is an unknown at this point and probably not even a head coach yet. Dabo will be here for a good while longer. Maybe G. Riley is some big name at that point but who knows.
Now if you want to play hypotheticals and say Dabo leaves next season then lord it’s Slim Pickens. My vote would be G. Riley. I think he’s an up and coming star.

His son Will would take his place and the 2nd son would be off: coordinator and you guessed it, the 3rd son would run the Def: Otherwise, how does anyone know the answer to your question?

I think it’ll be 10 years before we’re looking for a new HC but with that said…
Jeff Scott had it set up perfectly… BUT he fumbled. His lack of success at South Florida would make it hard for a Neff or another AD to choose him. Had he returned them to somewhat of a winning schedule he would have almost been a lock in my opinion. He’s best career path forward is joining as an analyst and moving back into the recruiting wars and maybe taking offensive cord role once Riley moves on. He could still be a major player and the one to beat if he comes back and has major success here. I love the Scott family. Brad is one of my favorite people in the world. I imagine Dabo would love to give his stamp of approval for Jeff. Speaking of Dabo’s approval… I would imagine he will lobby for someone on his staff to get the job.
Riley would be the likely choice if Dabo decided to hang it up after this year or next for some reason. Maybe like health or something. Someone’s going to say “Dabo’s not going anywhere in the next year or two” and I completely agree just saying if there was an emergency or if there was an accident or something.
Venables would also be a candidate. Especially if things go south at OU this year. He’s who I would choose to lead the program. I imagine he’ll be a defensive coordinator before you could bat your eye at some program if he’s let go of at OU and I would place my money on him being very successful. Still hoping he turns it around and wind a lot of games at OU.

That JOB at USF was a total rebuild job from the ground up, and Jeff was never the right choice for as fast as the USF folks wanted to see it done!!!

So Jeff Scott's success at South Florida would make it difficult for him to be considered but if things go south for Venables at OU it would make him a valid candiate?
Your logic is sound on this one...

Why do people always assume Renfrow has coaching aspirations

Has he said anything about wanting to coach? He just signed a $32M contract with $21M guaranteed; why would he want to subject himself to the nonsense of college coaching when he doesn't need the money? If he does wanna coach I could see him in high school actually working with kids on the field and not spending 80 hours a week recruiting.

Yesterday we spent some time discussing bridges. This is a Bridge Too Far. Dabo will be here until he gets run 9ff like they ran off Bobby from FSU. This guy is a legend in the making. We are fortunate to watch as it all unfolds

Not sure how much stock I put into what Scott did or did not do at USF. Didn’t inherit a great program and it was his first gig. I’m sure looking back he would change some things but at the end of the day I know nothing about his former staff and what hurdles that program was or is facing. That job seems to me like it would be ripe for someone to go in there and excel. Just got to recruit better than your competitors and I guess that is what surprised me the most about his time there. Was pulling for him to do well and he may do well in the future.
I’m still not convinced Coach V is a head coach. He will probably prove me wrong I’m just not seeing it. Not everyone that is a coordinator can run a football program.
To answer the question I have no idea who would come in after Dabo, but man I hope it goes better than when Ford got run off.
