I know us armchair coaches have our opinions

Mine is….Cade Klubnick needs to be named starter now to avoid the drama mid season (a Kelly Bryant situation). It’s inevitable that Cade will overtake DJ. He’s already just as good if not better. If I were head coach I would let him know hey we’re going with Cade out of the spring. You’ll have a chance to win it back in the fall but he is now repping with the ones.
But I’m not HC. So we’ll see what happens and enjoy the show!

I totally agree with you. Your opinion is spot on. Let DJ know he lost his starting job and see how he responds. Let him work and earn the starting job and not just given him. Once again I am totally with you on this.

I wouldn’t say he looked bad. Just been hyped that he was so much better. Looked the same !

This, but he did look like he's lost weight. So what? His performance still wasn't anything to write home over. Hopefully both look better in the Fall.

No doubt that he has lost weight, but

it also appears that he did not have his rib pads in today since they were off-limits to tackles. He did check down to the middle of the field a few times, which is a huge improvement and had a floater in to Ngata that showed some touch. All told, most of his throws were still off enough to make it more difficult for the receivers to catch them on the run.

He looked the same. Showed no improvement. Flashed some nice talent with one or two throws, but overall very underwhelming performance

That’s interesting, because I didn’t see anything from Cade today

to suggest that he is anywhere close to ready to be the starter.
I also agree that DJ, while in better shape, still seems to have many of the same issues he had last year.
It looks like we are going to rely heavily on our defense again to bail us out.

Just his instinct looks way better than DJ’s. With a serviceable OL Cade is going to be a good one . You can just tell .

It is amazing with all these QB camps out there that I would figure he is attending to help his pro stock that something would not change. Is this partially on our QB coach?

Idk. DJ seems to work hard but I also get the sense that he’s not very coachable. Like he puts in the work but thinks his way is the way and doesn’t receive criticism well. Maybe I’m wrong.

Tug I’m talking about this is year 2 with no noticeable improvement. Wondering is he not coached up or does he lack the ability.

I’m not sold on our ability to improve QBs since Morris left.

I felt like Tajh improved a ton under Morris.
After that we had Deshaun and Trevor - generational talents who were ready to play as freshmen. I don’t know that they really improved much during their three years at Clemson though. You could argue that they got slightly worse, especially in the case of Trevor.
DJ is the first QB we’ve had in a long time who needs serious coaching to improve his deficiencies, and I haven’t really seen that improvement. If anything, he’s gotten worse.
I sense a concerning pattern here, but I hope I’m wrong.

I could agree with this. It’s been hard to tell if Streeter really improved DW and TL.

And DJ would hit the portal leaving you with a freshman and Hunter Helms. That’s called shooting yourself in the foot.

So we are keeping him QB1 so he doesn’t transfer? That’s just plain wrong and dumb. Plus we have Johnson coming back. He’s no freshman

I get it’s a formality in spring. But naming one now maybe changes mindset or focus. Heck it may even change the roster. If a kid is only on the team because he’s a guaranteed starter then that raises a whole other conversation

Based on a lack of hype from our end and what I’ve read about his recruitment, it doesn’t seem like Matayo is a priority for us. Just my read.

Cade should not be named the starter just yet...

because he has such a long way to go.
It makes no sense to violently uproot the trees prematurely. What happened in 2018 with Trevor and KB was a perfect scenario. Repeating it is just fine with me.
Let both guys push each other. Like with Trevor, we don't want Cade to feel privileged in any way or take anything for granted. Let him and DJ compete the entire offseason and then sometime in August, name one guy as starter.
Our first 3 opponents (GaTech, Furman, LaTech) are pathetic creampuffs and easy wins regardless of who starts. Cade will get plenty of meaningful time with the first team. The season doesn't really begin until 24 September against Wake Forest. This is the absolute latest when Dabo must name Cade the starter.
When KB quit the team, he was very popular with the other players. But Trevor's talent vs. KB's spoke too loudly for them to be upset with the decision.
From what I saw watching the sidelines last season (albeit on TV), I got a strong sense DJ isn't popular with the other players. If he hit the portal, there wouldn't even be a small ripple on the water.
There is no need to make a rash announcement. IMO, every sign points to Cade and none to DJ. But Dabo should let Cade see it as a two-man battle as long as possible. If he names Cade the starter during August, I'm fine with that. If he waits until after game 3, so be it.
Like you said, we are all just "armchair coaches". But let's get our popcorn out and enjoy the show!

here, that the instant Cade is named the starter, DJ hits the transfer portal. And, on the other hand, if DJ struggles but continues to be the starter, then there is some chance that Klubnick gets discouraged about his chances of future playing time, and bails himself. This is the "rock and a hard place" that the dammed transfer portal has put head coaches in.

Cade can see what everyone else sees and knows he will be the starter sooner or later this season. He has no reason to be discouraged. DJ wasn't benched last year because the alternatives were even worse.
DJ also sees what everyone else sees. I think his finger is on the trigger. He could transfer at any time and may not even wait until Cade is named the starter. If this happens, so be it. My guess is he waits until Cade is named, which should be in August or sometime prior to game 4.
There is no "rock and a hard place" for us. Similar to Kelly Bryant, DJ leaving won't matter at all.
