Punting and run defense were our catalysts last year

If we can even be serviceable at punting and have the ability to flip the field, we can force offenses to play more conservative. Run defense last season was just poor tackling and angles. I’m hoping Allen can get that fixed this offseason. I’m not used to seeing teams run all over us like last year. There’s no excuse for that.

Absolutely - we have the offense to outscore any team on our schedule, so long as we don't get bad field position and put the defense in a bad position.

Agree yet Dabo Did nothing about the punting issue ???? No excuse to go into a promising season without the ability to punt the ball ! Dabo needs to be held accountable when this bites us in the ### this year !

If it does bite us, then yes - he should be held accountable and he's said so himself. He's convinced that he has a group of punters from which a good punter will emerge.
He also said that he thinks that Gunn will come through. I sure hope that either Gunn or the soccer player will get the job done, because the Spring Game showed a terrible weakness at the position.

At no point in any games did punting hurt us.

The punter had an average distance, but he was one of the best in the country at dropping it inside the 20.
Punting wasn’t an issue.

I respectfully disagree that punting was not an issue. There were several games where field position was important at the specific juncture of the game. Had we been able to flip the field on punts, we could’ve seen different outcomes on those losses.

Can you share those cases that I assume you’re thinking about, and can you help me understand how it ever cost us game.
Please don’t say it just to say it. When did all these occurrences happen, if at all, and how many times did it cost us a game?
Punting hasn’t been an issue as far as I can see. I don’t see a single occurrence where punting cost us any games or even a score for that matter. But maybe I’m missing a few dozen, I don’t know.

Poor punting against Texas, so much that the commentators were harping on it. I just rewatched that game so it’s fresh on my mind. Also cost us against SCar if memory serves.
Overall our special teams were poor. Hauser’s kick and Randall’s return against SMU were outliers.

Can you please share more details how punting cost us either of those two games, or perhaps even show where we gave short fields leading to scores? I just didn’t see that, at all.
Run defense cost both those games, and throw in an anemic offense against USuC.

Inside the 20 is average. How did we rate at dropping it inside the 10? And how many times did our opponents pin us inside the 10? A lot of games come down to field position, especially with a young offense like we have had the last couple of years. This year our offense should be able to help overcome this if it continues.

Punting was weak and when we would have chances to flip the field he would get off a 30 yarder and our opponent would be starting on their own 35 yard line instead of pinned back. That was very common.

You are truly clueless if you watched us play and don’t realize what a liability it is when we punt . Wow, just wow ! We were dead last in ACC and outside the top 100 in punting . You have to be joking because surely you aren’t this dumb ?

126th in net punting and you can’t admit that punting is a glaring weakness . You sir are truly out of touch with reality . Once again , last in ACC and 126th nationally !!!! Numbers don’t lie . Are you really going to try and defend this ?

I distinctly remember saying that if every team we pay has an Ray Guy award contender we should be able to find the next Dale Hatcher

Where it got the Tigers in trouble was in the 3 and out situations from our own 25 (or cases where a critical penalty moved us back to the spot on the field). That meant the opposition most often started their drive from around their own 40. That was not a good situation for the defense as offenses could scheme to force poor edge contain running the ball. A punter with a big leg like we see others do to the Tigers so often could flip the field back inside the 30. —- I’ll take a different view about the impact. I’m not sure the punting specifically cost us a game, but I do think improvement could have helped put some games on ice sooner. Pitt, VTech, SMU. Would really like to see special teams complement the offense and defense this season so Vizzina and many other young players get more meaningful snaps.

We Faced 3 of the top 9 punters in the nation last year
Our punter ( Swanson ) ranked 124th in the nation

I was at practice one day and Smith was absolutely booming kicks. Hopefully he can bring that to the stadium this year. He could be a weapon.

Failure to contain the edge was actually the worst issue on run defense. Poor angles was the second issue (I squarely blame Goodwin for that, as he was supposedly the LB coach).
