Our 18 YO grand daughter is in surgery at MUSC-Charleston for a serious condition. She has a birth deformaty with her spine, And looks like a ? on e-xray. Looking at her you see is very normal and lived an active life as a teenager, playing soccer skiing etc. This is not new and Drs wanted to wait until she was an adult to do surgery. Well, today is the day.
There a two teams of Nureo-surgeon doing the surgery, one from neck down and one from waist up and will install multiple rods/pins/screws.
They started surgery at 9:30 this morning are +6 hours in. Last report from OR they think they will be finished within 2-3 more hours. This was 30 mins ago. My wife is down there taking care of youngest grand.
She was accepted into Clemson back in Dec in 1st offers, where she will join her older sister who is a Jr at CU. She has had several blood transfushions and I know what color that is.

She has been in surgery since 9:30 this morning so we are about 9 hours. Drs said between 8-10 depending on conditions I believe it is taking longer to "close up" because of length of suture.
Told my son earlier in text that I haven't prayed this much since Vietnam and those summabithes were trying to kill us..

daughter with SEVERE Scoliosis, even with the rods, they were only able to get her about 60% straight. Hers had gotten so bad, it was impinging on organs.
I pray that Our Lord continues to guide the surgeons hands, and your daughter has the best possible outcome from this surgery. In Jesus name, I pray.

My daughter has had two scoliosis surgeries and the last time she got a lot of hardware in her back. She is not perfect but leading a very much nornal life with two kids of her own. She was 14 when she had her first surgery. She had hers done at Emory but MUSC is great. In fact she graduated there with a degree in physical therapy. Your grand daughter will do great and has a great future ahead.

My daughter had a similar surgery. She has other issues as well, but the surgery went well.
Prayers for a full recovery and permanent relief in her life.

Prayers sent out. I know first hand how harrowing and painful having rods and screws inserted into your vertebrae is. I had my last surgery in 2005 and and was finally able to return to the gym last year. I walked on a Walker for six months and a cane for three years. I pray she has better results. I know you’re in good hands as my cousin is the Dean at MUSC. His parents were the psychology chairs at USC for years. Other than choosing USC, they are some of the smartest people I know.

Thanks for all your prayers and support. Surgery went well and took +9 hrs. She went from post-op recovery straight to ICU. Drs. concerned about low blood pressure and swelling around neck throat area so they sedated her (coma?) and put her on a ventilator to do her breathing.
They are expecting to pull vent this a.m. and bring her back (wake her up). If all goes well, they expect her to take a few steps this afternoon and move her to a regular hospital room. Then a discharge either Friday afternoon or Sat morning.
Will keep you posted and again my family appreciates the thoughts and prayers.

ps. They could not reach 100% vertical on spine alignment due to caution about doing nerve damage and she will be about 2-3" taller.
