Position ratings

May 29, 2015, 3:42 PM

No exact science but taking into account experience, talent, depth, and production (so far) at the positions, I have come up with this.

Offense
Tackle: B+
Guard: C+
Center: B
Tight End: B+
WR: A+
QB: A
RB: B+

Defense:
DE: B
DT: B+
OLB: B+
MLB: B+
CB: B+
S: A

Kicking: B
Punting: C
Return: B

What say you?

I have a hard time giving QB an A from a depth standpoint because we don't really know what we have behind #4

Other than that, some specific positions I'm nervous about are RT, the DE opposite Lawson, Tight End, and Center until we know Guillermo is good to go (signs pointing in the right direction there)

Those are valid concerns.

Specifically related to QB, I gave it an A because the talent, production and experience are there. Depth is a concern because of DW's past health concerns and 2 freshman. However, I think the good outweighs the bad enough at that position to warrant an A, especially since it should be an A+ if DW stays healthy all year.

I don't know how you could rate the tight ends so highly. Haven't had a decent one since 2012.

Tackle: B- Battle is unpredictable, Gore is lost, and the two backups are true freshmen.
Guard: C- We are in trouble at LG with either Mac Lain or (God forbid he ever sees the field) Ryan Norton.
Center: C- Bumped up to a C- with the news of Guillermo. Would rate higher but he missed spring, can't count on him to supplant Norton just yet. Norton is a turnstyle.
Tight end: D. Worst position group on the roster the last 2 seasons. Leggett can't block, while Seckinger is almost as much of a liability as Norton. Hoping one of the freshmen can mix things up.
WR: A+ as usual
QB: A+ starter, D if he goes down.
RB: B for talent, A for depth. Hoping Gallman put on some weight this offseason.

DE: C because the depth is awful and Lawson can't do it by himself.
DT: B- no depth (sounds familiar)
LB: B with so many LBs on scholarship I would have hoped to have a reliable two deep at least...
CB: A+ on one side, C+ on the other. Call it a B/B+
S: B+ Kearse is a star but I'm not sold on Johnson or Green.

K: B-
P: C-
Return: Should be A once Cain and Ray Ray get here
