Portal, not NIL

If you consider Clemson’s culture, excellent facilities and our NIL program, we’re competitive. We’ve swung and missed on elite quarterback recruits with DJ and Cade. That certainly doesn’t help. If you look at other programs like Georgia Tech, Georgia, Ohio State, Texas… they will go out and get 10 portal players a year with experienced older players. For the first time ever we brought in three. One of which is our best defender thus far. This isn’t rocket science. If you go get the #2 best player off Mississippi Valley State’s offense, the number one player of New Mexico state offense, the number four player from Akron, etc… and they’re all juniors or older, you brought an experience and a higher skill level. It would be hard not to have an immediate improvement. It’s simple math. The only variable is team chemistry.
Honestly, the only terrible outcome from porting a lot of players into a top program was last year with FSU. But they had DJ. And he got hurt early in the season. Not a great case study. Everyone else has used it to amplify their team. But not Clemson.

Clemson is recruiting similar to how it was in 2018. Since then, our coaching staff talent has regressed, and Dabo refused to use the portal for years. Other teams such as UGA and Ohio State embraced the portal and seemingly made good staff hires when staff left. The regression was easily predictable although very painful to watch.

Yes with the portal if he teams are essentially signing 2 classes of recruits per year . Because of Dabos refusal to use it , we have given away our once large talent gap over ACC teams. The coaching blunders are evident and even national pundits are calling it out now . Zero development taking place , too many ### moments in games . Saturday , Dabo should have used the timeout with 25 seconds left before Tech made the duel goal. Number 1 you ice the kicker and secondly if he misses you have the ball at midfield and a timeout left with time for a few plays . The wins and losses since Venables and Scott left paint a very clear picture of Dabos coaching ability

Just fyi, there are 6 current starters on offense and defense for Ohio State. Igbinosun is starting his 3rd season at Ohio State. 2 players transferred last year - Sayin and Downs. 3 players transferred this year - Daniel’s, Klare, and Donaldson. Ohio State has certainly brought in others that play various roles. And some may play in the future. But Ohio State doesn’t bring in 10 starters per year. In fact, Ohio State was somewhat against bringing in portal players ant the beginning. Ohio States motto is “Developed Here.” Bringing in portalers seemed against everything they stood for. Eventually, it became apparent, that a few of wisely chosen culture fits could benefit the team immensely.

The difference for OSU and UGA is they are bringing in top 3 recruiting classes each year. Clemson is not. To become elite again, Clemson will have to be more aggressive in the portal.
Developing 3-4 star guys when OSU, UGA, LSU, etc are bringing in 5 stars and also using the portal makes it steep climb for Clemson.
