Portal is too easy of a target - look at coach experience

22

Sep 6, 2023, 11:40 AM

This is not an opinion. These are just stats.

QB - Riley - I'm not picking a fight with him. He's brand new

RB - Spiller. Played for Dabo, played in NFL for 7 years, promoted to RB coach with zero coaching experience. 36 years old

WR - Grisham. Played for Dabo, played 3 years in NFL, got hired by Dabo and promoted to wr coach with zero coaching experience. 36 years old

OL - Austin. Played for Dabo, played 4 years in NFL, worked for Dabo 3 years, then became OL coach for Georgia state 2 years, then Dabo hired him back. 2 years coaching experience. 36 years old

TE - Richardson. High school football coach at Northwestern for 9 years. 45 years old

DC/LB - Goodwin. No experience as a coach. 10 years experience as a defensive analyst. 38 years old

DE - Hall. Played with Dabo in college. Zero coaching experience outside of Clemson. 52 years old

S - Conn. Played with Dabo in College. 15 years as a high school coach. Zero college experience outside of Clemson. 51.

CB - Reed - No problems here

DT - Eason - no problems here either

One of many issues for sure

Hard to believe that Dabo has created that coaching

situation. Really unreal to look at that list. And even though Eason was a legit hire, his unit has been disappointing and underperformed since he took over.

If it were me, Spiller, Richardson, Conn, Goodwin, Grisham, Hall and Austin would all be gone. I'd simply tell them "Sorry I put you in a position that you couldn't possibly succeed due to your lack of coaching experience but hey, at least you got paid well."

agree I don't think he can do it all at once so start with

Spiller Richardson and Grisham. I would like a Venables type DC but not many of those out there

This is really stupid. Our running backs are the strength of the team. We haven't signed a 5 star with Spiller, but Clemson has only ever had one good 5 star running back, Spiller. Austin and Grisham are the issues.

Really need to hold off on the anti-Coach Spiller stuff around here. The last 3 years the running backs have been the only thing worth a f##k on this offense and Ship and Mafah have been coached extremely well to become big playmakers.

It's a really underwhelming bunch of resumes for guys who are coaching at what's been a top 5 program for a decade.

Nice post. Would be interesting to contrast that with the coaching staffs at UGA, Bama, Ohio State

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well one example that really makes it look terrible

1

Sep 6, 2023, 11:57 AM

is Hartline at OSU. He’s an alum also but he has gone absolutely bananas with recruiting and has the best unit in the country. Contrast his work with Grisham (who was one of my all time favorite players since I was a little white HS receiver while he was in college) and it’s just a glaring difference.

I took a quick look at Bama's staff - pretty much everyone had 7+ years of power 5 or NFL experience at their position group BEFORE coming to Alabama. Just looking at the UGA list of names - there is a lot of experience there too, but I don't have time to pull up their resumes.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The difference is striking.

Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo was previously an offensive coordinator at Georgia for seven years, then head coach at Colorado State for five years, then a power 5 offensive coordinator again (South Carolina, Auburn) before being hired as Georgia's offensive coordinator.

Georgia co-defensive coordinator Will Muschamp was defensive coordinator at LSU, then associate head coach with the Miami Dolphins. Then he was defensive coordinator at Auburn and then at Texas before becoming the head coach at Florida. He was then defensive coordinator at Auburn, followed by head coach at South Carolina before being Georgia's defensive coordinator.

Georgia's other co-defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann has worked his way up through the ranks at Alabama and then at Georgia before becoming their defensive coordinator.

Alabama defensive coordinator Kevin Steele was linebacker coach with the Carolina Panthers, then head coach at Baylor, followed by defensive coordinator at Alabama, Clemson, LSU, and Auburn, before being interim head coach at Tennessee briefly, then defensive coordinator at Miami before being hired by Alabama to be their defensive coordinator.

Alabama offensive coordinator Tommy Rees was an offensive assistant with the San Diego Chargers and offensive coordinator at Notre Dame before being hired as Alabama's offensive coordinator.

Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles was DC for a dozen years in the power 5 (Duke and Oklahoma State) prior to being hired at Ohio State.

Ohio State offensive coordinator Brian Hartline is an Ohio State alum who has worked his way up through the coaching ranks there.

Contrast the experience in this group with Goodwin, Conn, Elliott, and Streeter when they were hired. The difference is striking.

this is 1 of 3 issues of this program and the biggest maybe

1

Sep 6, 2023, 11:55 AM

the other two that go hand in hand are the friends and family signings and the transfer portal/NIL arrogance.
friends and Family players:
Josh Sapp (6'1 TE?)
Paul Tyson (one of the few portal guys but don't think for a second his connection to Bear Bryant is why he is on this team taking a ship)
Jahiem Lawson
Keith Adams jr
Kobe McCloud
Cole Turner
Misun Kelly

These are the ones I can think of and I'm pretty sure each time they were a fallback option when missed on the few recruits we offered at their position and most of these had very little offers elsewhere. Just seems like the easy fall back plan without a real plan if missed on the top guys. I sure someone here is going to do well by the end of their career but these are not guys that other schools are taking. Do we if their dad/brother didn't play here or dad did not play with Dabo or played at Daniel? No I don't think that Cole Turner is going to be a difference maker at WR.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is a huge issue.

Sep 6, 2023, 12:15 PM

When some of us criticized these hires in the past, we were told to trust Dabo and accused of not being good little rank-and-file Clemson football fans.

"If they are good enough for Dabo, they are good enough for me," many posters here said.

I somewhat understand giving a super successful coach like Dabo the benefit of the doubt, but there have to be limits. It would be nice if someone in Dabo's inner circle, or even our athletic director, felt that they could say, "Dabo, I don't think that's a good idea." But it doesn't seem that anyone feels they can.

Is Dabo surrounded by a bunch of yes men? Is that partly the reason why he hires the coaches he does, so they will rubber stamp everything he wants to do?

This illustrates the problem with giving one person so much authority and control. There has to be some accountability, some checks and balances, and it appears that Dabo can't be told no based on his previous success. As a fan of Dabo who is a bigger fan of Clemson, that concerns me.

Congratulations for having the guts to criticize Dabo

Sep 6, 2023, 2:38 PM

and not be a good little yes man.

But so what? Dabo is coach, he gets to hire who he wants and we get no say in it. Your criticism is useless, my cheering his decisions is useless, too.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Looks like mostly yes men

Re: Looks like mostly yes men

A new perception here. I think Dabo wants to develop coaches just like players. That would look real good on his resume. But I also think, as said above, he wants yes men.

I’m a huge Dabo fans, but he is human, and these conditions happen to all humans. He’s not immune. I once worked for large corporation, privately owned , whose owner died unexpectedly, and his 30 year old son was made the president. The 30 year old son was brilliant and a super nice guy, but he could not handle differing opinions and started hiring
nothing but buttkissers. It made me sick.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Portal is too easy of a target - look at coach experience

1

Sep 6, 2023, 12:44 PM

We can look at the coaches that Dabo has hired in the past

Robbie Caldwell: 33 years of experience
Kevin Steele: 29 years of experience
Brad Scott: 26 years of experience
Dan Brooks: 26 years of experience
Danny Pearman: 21 years of experience
Marion Hobby: 16 years of experience
Brent Venables: 16 years of experience
Mike Reed: 13 years of experience
Chris Rumph: 12 years of experience

Dabo also found success with inexperienced guys like Chad Morris, Tony Elliot, and Jeff Scott. But all of them were on staffs with other veteran coaches. I guess Dabo always wanted to build from within but couldn't do it earlier in his career. Now he can.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So we've gone from a very experienced staff

1
4

to a very inexperienced staff.

And it shows.

The program was built with an inexperienced head coach surrounded by experienced assistants.

Now the program is attempting to maintain itself with an experienced head coach surrounded by inexperienced assistants.

Absolutely! We have way to many guys on staff who

2

Are way in over there heads.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Portal is too easy of a target - look at coach experience

1

Sep 6, 2023, 1:35 PM

Reed should have gotten co dc not Conn in my opinion. Hall is week the receiver play speaks for itself the o line really doesn't look any better with plenty of returning players Richardson we rarely use the te so it's hard to tell. I try but haven't found faith in Goodwin. Those are resumes that resemble the staffs Southern Conference teams.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Reed is listed as Special Teams Coordinator...

1

Sep 6, 2023, 1:54 PM

So I think we need have a little bit of an issue with him.

Also, why is Richardson listed as the Passing Game Coordinator? Shouldn't that fall under Riley?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Portal is too easy of a target - look at coach experience

Someone on the offensive side will have to move on after this year to make room for Jeff Scott unless he takes an OC job somewhere else.
