Poll: What is your satisfaction with John Swofford?

Jul 22, 2015, 1:29 AM

I think I know the answer, but I'd like to see...

Are you satisfied with the work of John Swofford?    [Results]

No, the ACC could be a lot better off and have really missed some opportunities.
Yes, he's done an excellent job. The ACC is in good hands.
Some things are great, and some things could be a lot better.

Probably a minority report but.......

I think Swofford has done a good to almost great job a ACC Conference Commissioner. I am satisfied with his overall performance.

Here are his positive points:

**In the last 2 years ACC teams won a football championship, a baseball championship and a basketball championship. No other league has done as well on the national title stage as the ACC over the past two years.

**During the broken egg scramble of power league expansion and realignment, the ACC came out way ahead of where anyone predicted. Over 10 years, with the addition of Miami, VT, BC, Syracuse, Pitt and Louisville, the ACC destroyed the Big East and became the dominant east coast collegiate sports league in America. The ACC is poised to remain the dominant collegiate basketball league and in position to repeatedly challenge for the national title in football.

**The addition of Notre Dame to the league on a partial basis has and will bring a ton of new fans to ACC football and to all ACC sports television broadcasts. The Irish will be a headline game for many of the teams in the ACC most years. Naysayers want all or nothing from ND, but the ACC is the only league in position to get all of ND. Like them or not the Irish are a huge traditional power in many sports and the potential for full membership in the ACC is huge.

**In Swofford's tenure the ACC solidly entrenched itself as one of the five power leagues in college football. This was far far from a given in the year 2000. And the ACC is very clearly in better shape than the Big 12 which lost Nebraska, TAMU, Missouri and Colorado while adding only TCU and misplaced WVU. While the Big 10 is full of big, powerful universities and has traditionally outweighed the AC by a long shot, I think the ACC has gained a lot of ground on the Big 10.

Based on this track record, Swofford could be called a great conference commissioner, but......

MINUS, MINUS, MINUS......Swofford has failed miserably to discipline UNC for athletic transgressions which made the Tar Heels THE NUMBER 1 OUTLAW program in college athletics. (Slive of the SEC would not have tolerated UNC's actions without imposing league sanctions.) Swofford has failed miserably to react effectively to the lawlessness and out of control conduct of football players at FSU.

That's my call.

I have a friend who was Swofford's roommate and fraternity brother who works for Raycom. Not old news, but Swofford's son works for Raycom.
