Nabisco, Cookie Salesman, Columbia, SC, 1981-1984
Each summer when I got home from Clemson, I worked as a cookie salesman. I filled in for the regular salesmen while they were on vacation. I had to drive to the grocery stores, stock the shelves with cookies, build displays, take new orders, and provide samples for shoppers in the stores. The area I covered was all of SC and eastern Georgia. Nabisco later offered me a job as a full time salesman, but I turned it down. Life is full of decisions, and I made a good one here... some later were not this good as you will see.

Congrats Pig! Just curious, are you in your 60s? I was dignosed with metastatic melanoma in 2010 and was on target to retire at 55yrs old. All that went away with med bills and missed work due to chemo and med treatments. Now I'm on the 70yr old plan, still have almost 20yrs. My dad retired at 58 but my mom still works today at 70, she loves being a nurse.

I will be 62 at the end of this month. I go to the dermatologist every year for a mole patrol. Keep care of yourself.

College summer jobs are great. Make a little spending money and decide what you may or maybe even definitely don’t want to do for the rest of your working life. I had one dream summer job renting bicycles and sailboats to tourists on Seabrook Island and another working for my uncle’s carpet and floor covering business. That summer taking up asphalt tile flooring at St Andrew’s High School that had been down for probably 50 years convinced me I needed to finish college. None of the scrapers would work so I spent a lot of time on my knees busting the tiles with a ball pein hammer then scraping up the pieces. Sweat making puddles everywhere. It was after all, summer in West Ashley. My third college summer job was an internship at Coburg Dairy. That helped me in my career more than anything else I ever did.
A childhood friend of mine went to work for Nabisco in Charleston just a couple of years out of high school and spent his entire career with them, mostly in South Florida. He retired 2 years ago and seems to be doing well.

I saved enough money to by my future wife an engagement ring. I also bought a nice set of golf clubs and had the seats in my Bug recovered. Nabisco was a fine company, but I didn't want to be a cookie salesman forever.

(at least for me it was short) period where you will be saying "How do I fill up my days now?" But, you will quickly figure it out, I think.

That's almost exactly the same thing my dad told me when he retired. He said the 1st few weeks were a little boring, but you figure it out very quickly.

Congrats Pig on your soon to be retirement. Make sure you get a hobby if you don’t have one. When I retired I took up golf and that has been my salvage. Sit down in the chair long you may not get back up.Good Luck to a great tiger.

Thanks MoonTiger. I have all kinds of hobbies and about 30 friends who are retired, so I'm gonna have plenty to do. I play golf, my wife and I travel, we have a 1 year old grandson and a grand daughter on the way, we have a supper club, we are getting together a breakfast club, I have lots to do around the house, so I may have less free time after retiring.

It’s a little tougher this time of year just because of the weather. I retired January 1 last year and the first couple of months were a little slow but pretty much all of my hobbies involve being outdoors. Once the weather broke I had no problem finding things to do. I remember saying last fall that I still didn’t have time to do all the things I wanted to do. The great thing is being able to do a lot of the stuff you want to do during the week, keeping the weekends free for stuff that your kids or friends who are still working can only do on weekends.

Yep. I sold my plastics company 1.5 years ago, and I had to work for the new owner for 1.5 years as part of the deal. I owned it for 25 years, so I think I've paid my dues.

Congrats Pig! I think that I'm calling it quits March/April timeframe. Don't have a pension with current company, just 401k. So, it's basically saying that I'm retiring and quit. I'll be 66 in June and I'm tired of corporate life.

I think Nabisco underwent some negative changes when they were bought by RJR.
I visited an RJR facility in eastern, NC not too many weeks after the purchase. The hallway had a case full of RJR products. Among all of the cigarette packs was a box of Vanilla Wafers.
