Tommy Bowden still irritates me.

He’s a fine man of good character, but I never felt like he was completely dialed in on being an elite football coach. He seemed to think we should feel fortunate to have nine wins and a bowl game. He never really understood the fan base desire to win it all. He could have tried a little harder in my opinion and not relying so much on the Bowden name. It took a visionary named Dabo Swinney to drive that train to the promised land !

His problem was he didn't hate to lose.

Dabo hates to lose.

Color me old fashioned. But I believe if you are going to compete in sports, you do so to play to win. By following the rules, of course. But you don't celebrate losing and you don't accept it as part of your culture. You use whatever the rules allow and is available to help you win.

And I don't think anyone is irreplaceable at doing a job.

But that's just me. One is free to disagree and I am fine with that. Just don't expect me to be happy with losing.

Tommy wanted to win

But I think he had two issues that hurt him. First, he was not able to motivate his players to play at a high level every game. They tended to play at the level of their opponents. Playing FSU or Miami? Good chance of whipping them soundly. Playing Duke or Wake Forest? Upset special.

Second, he hired absolutely awful coordinators. Rob “Bubble Screen” Spence eventually cost him his job, and thankfully Dabo’s first act as new head coach was to send him packing. Then you had morons like Vic Koenning and Kevin Steele running the defense.

Koenning’s strategy was to have a bend-don’t-break defense. I talked to a DB who started under him, one I helped recruit, about what he thought our defensive problems were. It was during the season. He began to tear up as he explained that the coaches tell them to play 10 yards off the receiver, let them make the catch, then tackle them. “I’m good enough to play him tight and keep him from catching it at all,” he said. “It’s very frustrating.” Steele may have been even worse.

Tommy did fire a few coordinators (e.g. Mike O’Cain) but he became stubborn about Spence, Koenning, and Steele. It became his downfall.

Dabo hired Kevin Steele in 2009, but other than that I agree with everything you said.

Thanks for the correction. You are right. I guess I just disliked him so much I figured TB must have hired him.

Yeah, I remember now. Dabo had to make some early mistakes before he learned how to get it right.

I think some perspective on what he was dealing with help the perception of him. He found himself working with a fairly hostile administration as far as being a top tier team, and a perception amongst people in general that having a really big stadium was enough facilities-wise.
Again, when UNC can recruit a guy that we can't due to 'academics'... well, let's just say that's not a fair field to play on. He helped get that changed, and Dabo's interaction with the admin (as I believe he was the main liaison with them for Tommy) helped them trust him when he came into the job.

I'm not saying he would have been Nick Saban had he gotten the support Dabo has, but just saying he had additional barriers that had fallen away by the time Dabo got going that you have to take into account when judging his tenure here.

One of his sayings I never liked was, after a loss, he would always say, "50% of teams lost today".

He spent too much time trying to think about the big picture as opposed to the small details. And because of that, his teams were atrocious fundamentally. Remember the opener against Bama and he spent the offseason talking about winning championships and how good the team was going to be? And they weren't ready for Bama and it showed. It was all a phony act.

TB hired a nobody selling insurance as a WR coach and let him run wild recruiting and the rest is a glorious history. I'll always be grateful to TB.
