Pass play in end zone ruled out of bounds after review...

Help me understand this review...We throw to the endzone and our WR and their DB (both clearly inbounds) have what looks like simultaneous possession. They then both fall out of bounds and the DB wrestles the ball from our WR while lying on the ground out of bounds. The review determines that they were out of bounds...incomplete pass. I thought that the only two choices would have been TD or INT. How did you see it?

Just a guess but probably no clear possession (simultaneous) while they were in bounds

It’s a tricky spot and is open to a lot of interpretation by the ref. Truthfully the NCAA should set more clarity on a case like this but because it happens so rarely (and the NCAA is completely inept) it likely won’t happen.

The refs have to decide between one of three scenarios.

1. Was there a moment of time where one player had possession and the other did not while both players were inbounds. If so, possession goes to that player. This is what the announcers believed happened.

2. If it is determined that throughout the catch there was dual possession and the ball was not dislodged from either player until the catch is completed; possession goes to the offense and it is ruled a touchdown.

3. If neither player has possession of the ball until after both players fall out of bounds then the pass is ruled incomplete. This is what the referee on the field called and the replay review upheld.

and bad refs. We got a lucky call there. It could be worse. I'm surprised they didnt call a foul on Booker

On those types of plays the rules say the receiver must “survive” the ground. When a ball is caught on the way to the ground. Since both possessed the ball on the way to the ground, when they hit the ground and the defender wrestled the ball away they probably said the ball was moving so there wasn’t clear possession when they hit the ground. 🤷‍♂️

Correct ..... I think it was a good call. From the start of the "catch", it looked like the defender had the better grip on the ball and by the time the catch was completed he had full possession. He pretty much had control of the ball before they hit the ground or was at least gaining possession. Thus, our guy would have never completed and if they were in bounds it would have been an interception.

Basically, any questions revert to the call on the field. Even though it might have seemed like the call on the field was wrong, I don't think they were sure which way to rule on whose possession so they just stuck with the call.
