Oculus

Aug 24, 2015, 8:06 PM

I'm gonna ask a stupid question, just what is a "Oculus"? Does it shine a giant tiger paw in the sky like the bat in the Batman movies or what? This whole "Oculus" thing really has me confused. CLEMSON and "Oculus" just don't sound right to me.

The amount of people loving vs hating the Oculus is crazy. The project cost for the Oculus isn't that high. Most of the money was spent on providing a MAJOR upgrade to the South Club (Tiger Den).

Anyhow, the Oculus is a marque entrance for the team and will look great when running down the hill and when entering during Tiger Walk. It is partly meant to provide a "Wow" factor. Additionally the Oculus does allow the North and South to connect without walking near the West Zone seats which get crowded easily.

This is all part of the overall stadium image. Looking good inside and out. While the idea of shooting Dabo out of it like a cannon to then slowly & gracefully land him on the field waving an American flag is ideal, this is not part of the plan. Nor does the Oculus have a Tiger PAW bat symbol planned (but that would be feasible).

The entrance was always part of the overall stadium plan and now you are seeing it coming to fruition with phase 3 being all but wrapped up. Just in time for a title run!

If we're not gonna fire Dabo out of it...

Can we at least rocket Spurrier into that lake?

Oculus (Latin) = "an eye". Architecturally, it is a circular opening, usually in a roof, or at the top of a dome to bring light to the interior of an otherwise dim space. The most famous example of which, actually the definitive example, is the Pantheon in Rome, constructed almost 2000 years ago and still one of the most sublime expressions of the integration of spiritual purpose, human intellect and structural engineering ever created. Regarding the West End Zone, the open-top circular tower euphemistically referred to as the Oculus, is employed architecturally as both a "centering" element to the overall composition of mass and fenestration of the West elevation, and as an "object in space" that rallies one's attention to the significance of the transitional function it serves, i.e.: entry and north-south circulation. While it may not be the Pantheon in Rome, it is a hugely successful piece of Architectural design (note the interest and enthusiasm it's generated regarding both function and symbolical interpretation.) It works, it's interesting, it's fun. (Although I wish it had a night-time Paw symbol too!)

It's sports art, sit back and enjoy it. Don't think to much about it.

I guess to each his own. The Oculus does make the stadium look more impressive, I guess. What would really make our stadium super impressive would be to make the upper deck a complete horseshoe going over the East end zone. 115,000 seat stadium, that would be impressive.
