Paint type for plastic coolers

Sep 3, 2013, 11:43 AM

I'm trying to get a larger (70+ qt) cooler and finding one in orange is turning out to be quite the challenge, so I'm thinking I'll get one and paint it. I know some of you have painted coolers... what type of paint did you use? Anybody used something that you absolutely don't recommend? Thanks in advance.

primer to use on plastic.

You should be able to find the right type of primer to use then you can paint it with an acrylic paint which should provide a hard surface.

Just be sure to prime it first with at least two coats. If you don't prime it correctly when whatever finish paint you use won't adhere.

Scuff the plastic surface with sandpaper first, then use

a paint specifically for flexible surfaces or plastic. Using a flexible primer definitely wouldnt hurt.

the Krylon for plastic, the pain twill look good for a couple years.

Also, wash the cooler with mineral spirits to get any unseen residue off.

something a bit bigger. I have an orange 48 or 50 qt now, and this one wouldn't get me a whole lot of extra space. I'll probably go with something closer to 100 qt.

Google Clemson Color Palette
The first 2 hits for me are the ones I always reference. It's a website with swatch files, and an (older I believe) pdf with the values.

Buy a large Yeti and then take it to Specialty Camo Products in Augusta GA. They can did it in Clemson orange etc and put tiger paws in the coating. The did one in Camo for me and it was outstanding!!! Takes a while to get it back but it will be the last cooler you will have to buy.
