When Jim Barker stepped aside I recall a Clemson ranking (heard) of 21. Surely things have not gone down that much with President Clements. I am thinking that that #21 was among a smaller group of colleges … like only those financed by taxes maybe. Please jump in here with some info … anyone.
BTW, this ranking of 439 shows us ahead of only Louisville and SMU in the ACC. In the SEC we are ahead of all except Georgia, Florida, Vanderbilt, Texas and Texas A&M … South Carolina is 123 or so. In the Big Ten we are ahead of Oregon, Nebraska and Iowa … going from memory here, I did not make a list.
Perusing these rankings gives me pause. My every annual gift has been directed to the Cooper Library and always will be, but I never considered that our status was as low as these numbers indicate.
Second BTW, and a bit of humor. In 1990 or so the word was that when Arkansas left the SWC and joined the SEC the academic standing of both conferences improved. Without exhaustive examination, I can say that that statement is likely to be correct.
