Morris saying Watson will play against UGA says a few things

Jul 17, 2014, 3:33 PM

1. Kelly would have played. He's not confident enough to say Stoudt is the starter.

2. Watson might have the keys to the offense earlier than I expected. The best player is going to be on the field at that position. He's not going to stand by and let a serviceable QB be mediocre in a year where we have Vic, Grady and those guys one last time.

3. A lot of tigernet is eating crow after singing the Cole Stoudt praises when Kelly was kicked out. Many said how Stoudt was going to be the man, Morris doesn't seem to agree.

Just think its funny that Kelly is still bashed on here, but he would have been the QB this year. It takes a QB like Kelly or Watson to run that offense. I hope Stoudt has a great season, but everyone with those all orange glasses drinking that dark orange kool aid who thinks Cole Stoudt is the man may have a little wake up all, especially after what Morris said.

I think he's saying that you are over-reading Morris' comments and hearing what you want to hear. I think that he really likes Watson, that's why he'll get some PT against UGa. I also think that while Kelly may or may not have more talent than Stoudt, his maturity or lack thereof would have kept him on the sidelines this fall. We don't need a guy who's going to lose his cool under fire and Morris has been around long enough to know that.

maybe it has nothing to do with cole. if he goes in and performs at uga as i and the coaches expect he will indeed be the guy. have heard watson is as good as any of our coaches have seen. he is yet still a freshman. for the life of me i cant figure out why people seem to want cole to fail. sickening actually.

I don't want Cole to fail, I just don't think Cole can beat FSU, Scar, UGA, teams like that, the teams that Clemson has to beat to play for a National Championship. If Tajh couldn't, I don't believe Cole can. I hope he can, but I honesty thought Kelly could

Re: Morris saying Watson will play against UGA says a few things

Jul 17, 2014, 3:38 PM

Wrong. Kelly was not going to be the QB, which says a lot considering he's better-suited for Morris's offense. I believe that a good part of the reason Kelly got himself booted was that he knew he wasn't going to win the job and was frustrated at how that competition was playing out.

Re: Morris saying Watson will play against UGA says a few things

Jul 17, 2014, 3:42 PM

I see it differently, but I respect your opinion. I believe Kelly was put in the situation he was put in during the spring game to see how we would handle it. Coaches have seen Stoudt for 4+ years, they know what they have there. Kelly was coming back from injury, I believe they wanted to see him with lesser talent and how he would respond. And that hurt him severely. Put him on the team Stoudt was running with and I believe he shines. But he handled it poorly. I'm not saying he shouldn't have been kicked off, I'm just saying that all signs point to Kelly running the show this year.

Re: Morris saying Watson will play against UGA says a few things

Jul 17, 2014, 3:53 PM

Forget all signs. How can you say that even 1 sign pointed toward Kelly starting this fall? Let's say for argument's sake that you're right and that the coaches put him on the team with lesser talent to see how he would do. It's pretty obvious that he failed that test a) by not producing with that team and b) by falling apart mentally when he couldn't get it done.

Is there a key element that had him on top I'm not thinking about?

guess you dont have a clue afterall. kelly was not kicked off the team for his actions during the spring game. he was kicked off for his actions before and after the game.

Go back and check the D Stoudt played against. He might see a better one this year lol. And you're right it was before and after the spring game, spring game had nothing to do with it and him getting sat down for wanting to go for it with a bunch

Good point. I was just digging in to the Morris comments and what I thought they meant. Stoudt could very well do that, but I think it will be hard when Watson is on the field getting all the attention

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If Kelly was still here ...

Jul 17, 2014, 3:44 PM

1. I don't believe we would hear Morris saying Kelly would play in the first game.

2. If Morris said what he did about Watson playing, Kelly would be acting out in one way or another right now.

IMO that's why we are better off without him

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Or maybe it means Watson will run a wildcat package

similar to the 2006 Florida team with Tebow coming in as a freshmen for some packages but Chris Leak was the starter.

Deptula has it right...three games for Stoudt. Not all his fault because there are two tough games in there.

Re: Or maybe it means Watson will run a wildcat package

Jul 17, 2014, 3:51 PM [ in reply to Or maybe it means Watson will run a wildcat package ]

I don't think he brings the skinny young kid in to run QB draws up the middle. And I hope you are right about beating UGA bad enough to bring him in. Hopefully Schuessler can have mop up and Watson can red shirt. I hope Stoudt kills it, but Kelly was the guy in my eyes. I know everyone doesn't like him, but when he had talent around him he could make the plays. Spring game, he made bad decisions. Threw jump balls up to Rodriguez, Idc who you are that's never going to work. Kelly IMO was that elite signal caller you need to take the team to the next level. All of our star players loved him as you could see on twitter after he was kicked off. I'm behind Stoudt, just don't see him as that guy that takes a team over the hump

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It says one thing...

Jul 17, 2014, 3:46 PM

Morris knows we are going to kick THUGA's @$$ badly enough to play Deshaun for most of the second half.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The one thing it says to me

Jul 17, 2014, 3:52 PM

is that Stoudt and Watson are quarterbacks with strikingly different strengths and weaknesses and Coach Morris, realizing this, plans to have two different schemes ready for the dawgs and use both of them. Something their defense will have to factor into their preparation and will make it difficult for them. This is not the same as saying that Coach Morris does not have faith in Stoudt, just that he is smart enough to recognize that if you have two different weapons, deploy both of them.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: The one thing it says to me

Jul 17, 2014, 3:54 PM

So why wasn't the Cole Stoudt weapon been deployed before if he is such a weapon?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Watson vs Stoudt

Jul 17, 2014, 4:07 PM

to a certain point, I agree. I don't think there is many people who will say that Watson isn't the more talented player. But when Kelly was released, and Watson got dinged up. That left the staff kind of thin at the position. I think they got to the point where they basicly said, we better be careful. And while most believe Watson will be ready to go by fall practice, I am sure nothing is for sure.
So, what does that leave you.... Cole Stoudt. It will be really interesting to see Cole perform when teams are actually game planning for him.
But to a certain degree, I agree with you. If Watson starts to get significant minutes, he will over take Stoudt. Least you would think so. Otherwise, why would you waste a redshirt.

Re: Morris saying Watson will play against UGA says a few things

Jul 17, 2014, 4:12 PM

I think Cole will have a great year and doesn't lose the starting job to Watson. All that Morris is saying is that he's going to put Watson in for a series or even a few plays to mix things up and throw a wrinkle in the offense for the UGA game.

Kelly was full of drama even before he stepped foot on campus. Dabo knew this and he and the coaching staff did what they could to help him grow up, but in the end it wasn't enough. We don't need people like that in the locker room. He self destructed and showed how immature he was when he wasn't named the starter and had a poor spring game.

I rewatched the spring game the other day and I like what I saw from Stoudt. He's going to be efficient, protect the football, and take what the D gives him. We won't be scoring on 50 yard bombs and these will be 10-15 play drives, but that suits our personnel better with Watkins and Bryant gone.

Bottom line: I don't think you're going to see a major drop in our offensive output in 2014. Yes, it hurts to lose Watkins and Bryant, but I like our WRs coming back and Cole will feed the ball to our TEs.

I thought he said Watson would play in Georgia.

Re: When did he say that?

Jul 17, 2014, 6:13 PM

He did say Watson would play at Georgia. I don't take that as a slap at Stoudt. Watson is very talented and needs to be brought along. He is our future at QB, but Stoudt is our starter until Watson can take the job, and that may not be this year.

As to Kelly, I think the coaching staff had seen enough of him to know he was not mature enough to play QB for us. His actions and attitude during and after the spring game were no surprise to them. In losing to job to Stoudt, he would have transferred out anyway! Let's all just wish him well and forget about him!!!!!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You need to start reading the whole story and not just

Jul 17, 2014, 5:59 PM

the headlines...

Morris said Stoudt is the starter and deserves it. He also said that Watson would have played regardless of Kelly being here. Kelly would NOT have been the starter.

Stoudt IS the man...for now, anyway. If he performs well he will remain the man.

SMH.

wrong on #1 as Morris has actually stated that Cole is the starter and #3 is also contradicted by the coach you reference. #2 is some reference that Cole is mediocre, which will most likely be proven wrong once the season is underway. He's looked extremely poised and capable in his limited opportunities. I will personally give him immense credit for leading us to victory against BC back in 2011 when Boyd went down. BC is a team that has had our number - they are not an easy out, and Cole went and got it done.

People give Stoudt junk for sitting behind Boyd. A lot of people fail to realize Tajh's role in our program's turnaround. He was the commit we HAD to get in that small 2009 class, and his loyalty was repaid with Dabo giving him every opportunity to shine despite a few problem games and some inconsistency along the way.

You don't have to miss CJ. He goes by Davidson and he wears #32.

Jul 18, 2014, 6:21 AM

Georgia in order to muddle their defensive scheming.

I believe Cole will not only start but will play the entire game, short of injury, God forbid.

Coaches have a tendency to say a whole lot of things, sometimes proven true, sometimes not. I call it misdirection.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My guess is...

Jul 18, 2014, 6:39 AM

DW has master a portion of the playbook enough to put him in the fire. When his plays are suitable we'll see him on the field.

I think Cole is mature enough to know that having DW gain some experience is good for Clemson. That is to say that having a selective dual QB system won't damage Cole's ego.

This will be all about rewarding DW for his talent, skill development and effort and not about punishing Cole for any deficiencies.

likely wouldn't have had a temper tantrum.

Especially not being able to run after being slightly touched by a defender's fingertips in the Spring Gane, Kelly did nothing to prove he should get the nod over Stoudt.

I find it interesting that Morris has said Watson will play but I personally haven't heard anything from Dabo on the particular subject. If Dabo has said something about Watson playing against Georgia I'd appreciate a link to a video or a tweet or something.
