Open Letter to Coach Swinney

Nov 18, 2014, 1:31 PM

Coach Swinney you know a lot about football, but I know a lot about leadership. I spent over 36 years in the US Army and the DoD.

Coach: You are failing at basic leadership!

It’s as simple as this: you have to respect the entire team — not just one player.
EVERYONE but you knows that Cole Stoudt does NOT give the team the best chance to win.
Maybe with Stoudt we can win over GA State — maybe not. He has to play better than he did against GA TECH to win.
BTW: I’m 70 years of age and have been going to Clemson games for longer than you have been alive — so, I’m not just some “young person surrounded by negativity”.

Your blind loyalty to Cole Stoudt has left you:

Disrespecting every player on the team — Both the offensive line and the entire defense. I was at the GA TECH game and saw the first pick-six. It was on nobody but Stoudt. I was also at the other games where you say Stoudt did a great job. Not true — it was the defense that won those games. These players want to win, and you are doing your best to ensure they do not win. How can you expect loyalty from the other team members if you are not loyal to them?
Disrespecting fans who want the team to succeed. Of course we will not win all games, but you are throwing games away. I for one, put a lot of time and effort into attending Clemson games. Now I hate to see the offense take the field when Stoudt comes out at quarterback. Personally I never boo any college player, even opposing ones — I think it is low class. But, have you ever thought, the fans are really booing YOU and your insistence on proving a point? If not, its time you did.
Never examining your role in the leadership of the entire team — not some misplaced loyalty to one person.
Taking a chance on losing some of our valuable future recruits.

Clemson fans are football savvy and are not easily fooled. Right now it seems you are fooling yourself in this one matter.

Well said. I wish he could read it. Dabo is not pushing the right buttons for us to win at all. He is losing respect.

why not stop the "open letters" on Tigernet to everybody and actually write or email a letter to the intended reader....and be sure to include your name, rank and serial number (or address), I understand Coach Swinney frequently responds to rational correspondence

Nov 18, 2014, 1:39 PM

Thank you - perfectly stated! Damm, I hate to say this - but Dabo is coming off looking a lot like Jimbo in this debacle. By refusing to acknowledge what he's seeing on the field (just like Jimbo and Winston's off the field shenanigans), he's only dividing the team and encouraging poor play. What's the reward for the guys that are out there busting their a$$es week after week? Why should the defense make a 3 and out stand, only to give the ball back to our offense and let them turn it over again? He's letting his personal beliefs of an athlete (using the loosest terms possible) cloud what he's seeing, and it's not helping anyone. Expect our team to drift further downward, as other players lose hope and also get jaded by the favoritism we're all watching.

That look of Deshaun upset after he came off the field - that wasn't because of his injury - it was because he watched Stoudt throw away in 2 seconds what he'd been working toward. He knew right then that we'd lost the game - we all did. Well, everyone except for Dabo and/or Chad...

Who is saying that Dabo should bash his players???

Nov 18, 2014, 2:05 PM [ in reply to Re: Open Letter to Coach Swinney ]

Big difference between benching and bashing. The best player should play, period. Cole Stoudt is painfully, obviously not the best player. Nick Schuessler may not be much better but he needs to be given the chance to practice with the 1st team and see what he can do. NO WAY could he be any worse. Dabo is making a mistake that is effecting the entire football program, anyone can see that.

Most of the Coaches who wear national championship rings (that they earned as head coach) seem to have absolutely no problem calling out players when their performance is not up to expectations. They seem to still get recruits.

First of all, if you spent 36 years in the US Army, thank you. Secondly, I believe that you have stated very clearly and respectfully what many of us have been thinking. What Dabo is doing isn't working and as fans, we are not looking forward to facing USuC with this team without some changes. Do what is right for the team, Dabo.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dabo...love the guy BUT

Nov 18, 2014, 1:47 PM [ in reply to Re: Open Letter to Coach Swinney ]

Watching and listening to the latest interview with Dabo reminds me of someone living with an alcholic...they keep defending them and how they only take a couple of drinks. An enabler, I can agree Cole has been a great kid, hung around waiting for his day in the sun and bla..bla..bla. BUT he has had his opportunity, his chances...sure he has won a few games but mainly because the defense has played so well.... not becuase he has put up a lot of points. His confidence is shot, he is done. Hand the ball off to the next guy Saturday, tell Cole thanks and let it go. Sorry, not being hard or cruel but if he was in a company and made this many errors, he would have been shown the door weeks ago.

Re: Open Letter to Coach Swinney

Nov 18, 2014, 1:56 PM

Sir,

Perhaps, Coach Swinney is leading. Perhaps he is seeing a chance to rebuild a man who is perhaps broken and build him up into the man he can become or man he can return to.

Many on TNet have forgotten... Nick is 3rd string and has been 3rd string for a reason. DW4 is hurt. He will not play this Saturday. And this game Saturday is the opportunity to allow a man to test his merit and be the leader that the coaches feel he can be and that this team needs. BUt if he fails or steps backward against Ga St, then Nick comes in to become backup QB.

But also how do you know what you think you know?

Are you in the meetings with the QBs?

Have you sat in and seen/heard how each QB responds to coaches questions, plays in practices, works out with team and alone, knows the offense, etc.?

Has Coach Morris the QB coach told you something? Was it in confidence?

Do you know how good Nick S is at QB?
- Have you coached him?
- Do you view him in practice?
- Do the two of you go over the playbook together?

Have you spoken to the other players? Have they told you secret information?

Thank you for your service and providing freedom for the vast majority of us.

Leadership in the military may not be the same thing as leadership everywhere. Court Martials can certainly help motivate followership and assist leaders in getting a collection of individuals to become a force/unit. Some of that sounds like what we need in our football team.

But let me also ask you about what this means to you... "Never leave a man behind."

How does that play here with Cole Stoudt?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Amen, brother. My 37 years of wearing

DISRESPECTED BY SWINNEY? Do you know for a fact that The third string guy is better than Stoudt from the time he was in the game Saturday? If you haven't asked , then you don't know. And just because you spent a long time in the military, it doesn't mean you know any more about leadership than the average guy. In my short time in the military, I witnessed many "leaders" make decisions that ended up getting guys killed when it was obvious that there were other ways to get things done in a safer manner. Once , our leader sent us a tattered hemp rope to use in crossing a raging river and insisted that we cross at the roughest part - when it broke, a friend drowned because of that decision. How many games would we have won if Stoudt hadn't been willing to play through a lot of pain? Looks like an old military guy would appreciate a guy who goes into the trenches and suffers through pain for the good of the team.

I don't see how your experience is relevant here

Nov 18, 2014, 9:13 PM

Strip away the military as the crutch of your perceived expertise here. If I told you that I ran a Fortune 500 company, would I warrant as much credibility as a qualified leader as you? Probably more so. No disrespect, sir.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt though. As a leader, you would obviously take all available information into account before making a decision, right? So, in your opinion after watching a year's worth of practices and discussing the abilities of each quarterback with Chad Morris you have come to this opinion? Oh wait, you're taking the probably scripted words of a coach from a press conference and making a personality judgment from it.
