Bama was not ahead. They were tied. Sliding down at the five presupposes that Bama’s FG attempt would not have been blocked, or that Bama would have scored a TD on one or two of their next plays.

Of course Bama was going to try to score as easily as they could.

What in Earth were the Gamecoots thinking by giving Bama the TD?

But I think the odds of blocking a chip shot XP length FG is potentially lower than Sellers finding a receiver or 2 for a TD with 40 seconds left.

If he tackles him, they take a knee, run the time off and kick a chip shot to win.

This *at least* gives them a chance (which ain't gonna happenm but it's better than no chance).

I mean in your original post you suggested he did it on purpose (for gambling reasons). Can't see that being an accident. It was smart, but then the return team screwed any chance for a comeback for USC.
