One observation from the game. Our student section

is as unengaged as I’ve ever seen them. I was noticing in the first half how there was much more noise coming from the non-student sections. Students just standing around talking. Definitely not all but a good percentage.
Now, if there was an opportunity to do a super cool tick tok dance, or bounce to seven nation army, they were all in. Otherwise they were just hanging out most of the time.
At the end of the first half we were in the middle of a goal line stand and all the old people and kids in my section were screaming their fool heads off. I glance at the hill and students are leaving or sitting down chilling. I’m not sure some even knew a game was going on. Some were engaged but I was struck by how quiet and seemingly uncaring a large number of students were.
So, I took a picture. It was 2nd and 9 at the 11…29 sec left in the half. Wondering who else noticed.
It was nothing like this when I was a student (80’s). I guess times have truly changed and I’m getting old.
Now, get off my lawn! And, go Tigers!

The world is changing. Today’s students live in more of a virtual world and football is less of a priority. Not right or wrong just different. A different world.

Maybe they get tired screaming their lungs out for an offense that doesn't deliver. Hard to go gaga over one touchdown and four field goals.

Sports teams are at a crossroads…either adapt or get left behind. Most teams or schools have even hired directors of gameday experience to help with engaging fans who are on phones or there for social purposes. Look for more music from DJs etc. to help engage our youth and young adults.

They used to have better sideline section seats too. Before carving them out to give to IPTAY donors. Not just Section A and AA.

In state enrollment is now around 56%. If you look back 20 years ago that number was closer to 70%.

In my day everyone hit a ticket and went to every game. Now very few get tickets and most are way up in the upper deck. Make no mistake Clemson has bred and cultivated a disinterested student section. Some may not get to go to more than a dozen games in four years. That does not get the investment you want to see for the students. It’s a shame. So many of my great college memories center around football saturdays.

I agree. When I was a student there were about 10,000 undergrads. There were 10,000 student tickets. Plenty for everyone that was interested in the game and even date tickets.
Now we have 20,000 ish undergrads but still 10,000 student tickets.
I know kids that are juniors and IPTAY members that got tickets to 2 games. They just buy off stub hub.
FWIW, the kids I know complain about the other students not being all in.

Very true. Clemson needs to change they way they give out tickets.
Students complain that they can’t get tickets.
The administration needs to fix this.

18-22 year olds are always looking for the next big thing. A football game is a 3.5 hour engagement. That’s a long time to hold the attention of this group.

What happened to having a mic guy and doing actual cheers/chants. I'm sure all of our old cheers have been lost except for cadence count. You once could even here the mic guys on TV or the radio in the background back in the day. Alabama and Auburn still do this with the old school cheers/chants.

NC Student section was sure "engaged"... but we don't have a dragon to slay in Death valley like other schools when we come the their house.

Worse than the lack of interest - we were at the game last night and just finished watching the dvr version of the tv broadcast. Going into one commercial break they showed the student section and there were several students giving the middle finger salute, some with both hands. On national tv. Then near the end of the game after a turnover or stop when we were spelling C-L-E-M-S-O-N you could clearly hear on the tv the profanity the students have started inserting between the O and N. It was so clear on the tv that when the chant came around the second time they cut the audio so it wouldn’t be aired. I know kids will be kids and all that but I wish there was some way to get them to understand how inserting the profanity into that chant hurts our image on national tv. The networks will just stop airing that moment and when Death Valley is rocking the C-L-E-M-S-O-N chant is is aired it is very impressive. It would be too bad to have the networks not air it because of this. We had a couple of bridge students sitting in front of us and they started with the middle finger salutes early - maybe even before the game started. I had a conversation with them and explained that we don’t do things that way and they were fine after that. I just don’t think the students realize how bad this looks. And yea - now get off my lawn.

Stop playing music right up to the snap

I agree the students need to be better. Noticeably quiet on long BC drives especially on their end of the field (students). It has been a long time since we needed to help the team with noise. I also think the music drowns out the ability of the fans to scream. They play some music all the way up to the snap. Its hard to get the fans/students loud in 2 seconds.
