Question for the board ok FSU game

If Venables was still here at Clemson as DC, in charge of this exact group of players, how would you feel about the defense?
On the flip side, if Elliot/Scott/Streeter where as OC still, what would you feel about the offenses chances of being successful Saturday?
For the most part, these are the same 2 teams as last year where Clemson handled them on the road. The exception being Cade, and some weapons for them.
Why does it feel like Clemson has taken a step back when it returns a veteran group and IMO a big upgrade at QB?

than anyone else's since Covid. So im fine there.
BV's defenses also started looking soft in the secondary near the end of his run -- like remember he did coach our seniors/juniors and they sucked in DJs first year.
I am completely fine with Nick Eason's and Garret Riley's teams

This defense has not played bad at all. Our offense has put them in some very bad spots with turnovers and turnover returns being taken back inside our 25-30 yard line. Outside of that our d hasn’t given up much at all. I’m good with where the defense is right now. The offense has looked better thee last couple weeks and there’s really no way to tell how good they are till this weekend. It will be a good measure of growth. If they play within themselves and don’t make all the careless mistakes I think Clemson wins a close game 24-17/27-21 type. But if they lose confidence and play sloppy football they will get beat. Either way Go Tigers, Beat the Criminoles!

This. If you look at our stats, the defense has been stuck with a short field multiple times due to silly turnovers by the offense.

Another interesting thing about last year’s FSU game was it was a turning point after the fact for both teams. This was the game where DJ lost his confidence in the 2nd half for whatever reason, and the comeback FSU had in junk time to make the game close seemed to turn them around. Clemson was maybe their last defeat?

I'm not qualified to answer the question about OC and DC.
But, I will make this comment: I think both teams are significantly better than they were last year. Niether team is "basically the same team" IMHO.

You’re right. The Noles did add some big time weapons and players in general. Clemson did not and that is part of the attraction of this game. The battle of philosophies..

Bret,
I agree that I think both teams are better, But I worry that FSU has made bigger strides in more important areas.
If y'all agree with me, could anyone be more specific as to where they think FSU has made the biggest improvements from last season ?

Because Porkchop is just that, a porkchop. The leaders on this team are all talk. The best players aren't starters. Player development is questionable. The whole atmosphere surrounding this team seems to just be stale air.

Would feel better with Coach V and Skalski helping him out - Scott would be a nice addition to GR's staff on the O. It is what it is. The players just have to play. The coaches are not suiting up. It is on the players.

You’re correct. Even with the best coaching in the world the players still have to execute and playmakers have to make plays.

I would certainly feel that they are all very experienced, but also wonder why they've never been offered a head coaching job.

I'm fine with the defense this year so far... overall. The offense is what lost the Duke game. With the exception of a missed tackle for a sack (which turned into a TD for Duke) and another play or 2, I think the defense has played well. And their numbers say they've played well.
Now the offense on the other hand has played well at times, but they have also been mistake prone. If they could get rid of the costly mistakes, I think they could be classified as well above average.
I am looking forward to the offense getting it all together against FSU and the defense continuing to improve their tackling and eliminate any busted coverages. If the team can do these things, we'll beat FSU on Saturday.
Go Tigers!!! Beat FSU!!!

Goodwin watched and was mentored under B.V. for multiple years. I can understand, with the lack of success B. V. had while here, why Dabo would want to hire a coach with a 180 degree different philosophy from the previously failed administration

I feel good about this defense, WITH Wes Goodwin in charge.

He is not Brent Venables, and neither is anybody else. And, since Brent Venables ain't coming back, don't you think it's time to stop wishing upon that star?
Wes Goodwin is charting his OWN course. He is going to be a very good coach for us, in my mind, he already is. Some of you will never be won over, because he doesn't get into all the histrionics on the sidelines that Brent did. In reality, not many coaches do. That has nothing to do with determining if the man can coach or not. Get over it.
