On Todd Bates

I think he's a good person, good coach and I'm thankful for the job he did at Clemson. Do I like the way he left? No, but I think he was probably upset over not getting the Conn role that he now has at OU and I can understand that. Do I think Eason is an upgrade? Yes.

I’m sure his feelings were really hurt! It is just terrible that Dabo was only going to give him a $200,000 per year raise.

Recruiting is always about hyping your current employer up. No need to take things personally. As long as they do not trash Clemson like Chris Rumph did after going to Bama, then who cares?

Agreed. Good Post. Let’s not make Todd a villain. However if you read his post, he seemed much more enamored and appreciative of BV than Dabo.

Coach V wanted the two guys that are now co-DCs here… he got the odd man out. And now in comes Eason. 11th win of the season, in my book.

That's very interesting if true.

Did Venables really want Wes and Conn first?

Yes. Goodwin was BV's first choice for DC. Goodwin was his right hand man.

I think he wanted to go with Brent but hanged on to...

see is his replacement was able to come onboard. I do not believe most Tiger Fans understand the relationships Dabo has with his coaches and assistants. These guys were/are like brother. Dabo wanted all those guys to make the transition to the next level and helped them all he could without hurting Clemson. They love Dabo and would never leave him in the lurch. We ain't talking Chad Morris here fellows.

I mostly agree with what you're saying, but in my view something

doesn't seem kosher about Bates' move. To your point Dabo seems to have great relationships with his coaches, but what I don't get is .. why was Bates just given a bigger role and a $200k raise if him and Dabo both new Todd was looking to go?

I agree, except I don’t have a problem with how he left.

He didn’t do anything wrong, and was well within his rights to leave.

I personally believe the whole deal was planned from the beginning & Todd getting a raise justified paying Nick more coming in from Auburn plus Todd helped us through the recruiting period. I believe Dabo & Brent worked this out to begin with.
I’m happy with the hire & Todd leaving considering Nick is coming in. I do think Todd would not be a choice here for head coach later because of no loyalty to Dabo or the perception of it.

Wes has been a part of Clemson football since 2009 (except for the 2 years he spent with the Cardinals). Todd first arrived at Clemson in 2017. I can understand the disappointment, but thought he could have handled it more tactfully considering he left behind players who are still active on the team.

Wouldn’t an “associate head coach” still qualify for a HC position elsewhere, title is an upgrade or equal on a resume. Todd is a great guy and doesn’t deserve any negative comments. Business decision for him. In Dabo we trust! Go Tigers. Easton hire is money for us and recruiting.

Asst or Assoc HC is a glorified position coach title that allows for a larger paycheck. The true path to head coach is via the coordinator position these days. Both Bates and Dabo know that but Dabo’s promotion plan didn’t include Bates (at this time atleast). That new title allowed him to give Bates a raise and an opportunity to say nice things at the press conference, but Bates knew this wasn’t moving his career forward if he desires to be a head coach in the future. Bates made a career decision and that’s fine by me.

The title worked for Shane Beamer. He was an assistant head coach but not a coordinator.
