and was grateful for it and the job..and thus stayed around beautiful little clemPson for more years than the average age of our Tigernet board members..
and unbelievably in these days of luxury he performed every duty known to man & coaches..from helping to wash the uniforms, to planting & mowing the playing field, cutting the hedges that he helped plant, to going out across the entire state of SC in an old beat-up car in the hot summers of 1939-40 & afterwards to beg starving farmers & citizens for $10 a year (for an organization known as IPTAY) so his football Boys could compete against Wofford or PC or better yet the big boy teams.
At age 72 he was pushing a two-page weekly paper football mag which had Leonard’s Losers & all the teams playing that Saturday info in it so he could have extra dough to go along with his state retirement check.
Saying, what a screwed up world of economics he’s missing out on now when about every college head or assistant head coach with any intellect & football knowledge is getting $1,000,000 to $15,000,000 (Kelly of ND going to LSU) per year!
Thx Coach Howard for all you did over the 30+ years to build Clemson football from basically the ground up so all those coaches who followed you could reap the benefits..with the current staff making millions each and some may be leaving Tigertown soon or in the near future for greener pastures..
but surely no greener than that football field you helped take from nothing to something that has a PAW symbol on it..a logo that stirs the hearts of so many talented football players that they want to play ball on it, protect it from opposing teams..
and when doing so tens of thousands of Clemson fans run onto that Field of Dreams you helped create after victories..
and without knowing it, you are buried just 300 yards away, up on Cemetery Hill looking down at your Boys and their fans, with a smile for sure.
Thx Coach..thanks for hanging around and being a promoter, salesman, visionary, believer & loyalist for Clemson College during its football growing-up days!
GoTiGERS!

Coach Howard never earned anything near $50K per year. The salary I remember was $29K, and that was near the top level for college football coaches. Bama paid Bear Bryant about that amount in the 1960s, but Bear had a number of side deals with boosters that made him rich.
In the 1940s and 50s, Coach Howard's salary was about $5K, the same as faculty department heads, and his assistants made $3-4K per year. If we won a big bowl, Coach Howard usually got a $1K bonus, and assistants got $500.
If you view the old trustee meetings' minutes on Tiger Prints, all salaries are shown, including professors. Back then, the trustees approved every penny spent by Clemson College.
Those of us who graduated from Clemson in the 1960s remember that an average family lived good on $7K per year.

Coach Howard spoke at my high school athletic banquet once. Can't remember the exact year but would have been about 1980.
I wish I remembered more about what he said, but the one thing I recall is that he said he was sorry to see Fran Tarkenton leave Georgia for the NFL, because he never liked to see anybody have to take a pay cut!
That got a big laugh. Kind of funny to thank about it again with all the shenanigans going on these days.

He was hilarious in his retirement - I recall him on the radio shows before the game and that man had a dry wit!

In other words...Legend. That is what was on his Clemson office door after he retired from coaching.
Great tribute, LBB!

Rumor was going around one time back when Ford was the coach, that they would like to bring back Coach Howard to coach one game. Seems that Coach Howard said something like, " if they would pay me what they pay Ford, I might thank about it. "

One of the best stories I remember about Coach Howard was told by Bob Bradley. I don't remember all the details, they were together and Bob picked up what he thought was a soft drink and took a big swig of Coach Howard's bacca juice!

During my time in the tin cans Frank Howard was the main man on campus. He was a great coach for the times --> excellent!! He loved all, and all loved him. He was also one of the best Southern style public speakers of all time. (Bobby Bowden and Lou Holtz are a couple of the type). He was born to be on stage with a mic.
Thanks for bring this guy up LBB. I am a fan of Frank Howard.
1951 Orange Bowl --> Frank Howard won over Miami 15-14.

In the mid sixties while working for Southern Bell, I along with eight or ten more from South Carolina were temporally transferred to Ft Lauderdale from September until the end of November. A group of us made arrangements one weekend to go on a charter for King Mackerel off the coast. During the trip while we were drifting for King I struck up a conversation with the captain. One thing led to another and the conversation moved to football. He said he was a Miami grad and I told him I was a Clemson man. He said do you remember the 1951 Orange Bowl? I told him I sure do we won 15-14. He reached out his hand and as we shook hands he said I am Frank Smith, the guy that was tackled for a safety!
