Old route from Aiken

May 28, 2021, 3:39 PM

Anyone remember the route from Aiken to Clemson back in the day that went through all the roads that were not on the maps back them. Memory seems to have faded and nothing looks familiar to me on google maps! I thought there was a Cutover near Edgefield that eventually dropped you out on hwy 28 north of McCormick. I may be remembering wrong

19 would take you from Aiken to Trenton, then 25 into Edgefield. Easiest old school way would have been through downtown Greenwood, Hodges, Honea Path, Anderson, then Clemson. I suppose you could cut from Edgefield to Hwy 28 and go through MacCormick and Calhoun Falls to 25 bypass then to Clemson on 76.

I didn't live in Aiken, but used to go through there, to Edgefield, then take a cutover that ended in Plum Branch. That was the intersection, I believe, with 28. Don't remember the other highway numbers.

However, this was south of McCormick. We still went through McCormick.

The other route was through Greenwood and Honea Path as mentioned above. Over time I began to prefer the McCormick route.

The road from 25 to Plum Branch is 283.
Another route is 25 almost to Greenwood, turning left onto 225 just before town. Take 225 around to 72, then through downtown Abbeville to 28. Started going that way after a deer jumped over the hood of my car on 283 late one night.

You must be referring to the famous "Goat Trail". It runs through the Sumter National Forest and starts as Key Road off of SC 230 between Edgefield and Modoc. It winds up to Abbeville and hits SC 28 which takes you to Anderson and Clemson. Lots of stories to tell about traveling this route back in the early 80's on my way to and from Clemson.

Yeah, although I never heard it called that. But that’s it. I couldn’t remember where it dumped out on 28. Thx!

There was a bridge out between 23 and 283. Take Walker road to 378. Then turn left and the goat trail will be on the right just a few miles towards McCormick.

As you can tell from my handle I drove that route many a time in my old Oldsmobile Cutlass. Below is a link to the real path google won’t tell you little prompting.
I swear I saw the same old man sitting on the porch at that old antebellum house at the turn almost every trip.

Yeah, that’s it. I remember one a similar rout someone saying- turn right when you see the dumpsters. None of those roads were on my SC highway map. It was all word of mouth.

The old Goat Trail bout killed me coming home from Clemson.

At the mansion, you had to take a right or else you immediately hit a dirt road. Late at night, not driving 55 to stay alive and I missed the right, hit that not-well maintained dirt road .... Well, I am writing this so I ended up okay.

That has to be one of the most desolate 2hr drives

You can take in SC. I’d like to try it now.

Back in the old hitch hiking days of the late 60's and early 70's, getting from Clemson to US-15 took almost the same amount of time as from I'26 to Walterboro on 15. That was before 95. there was almost no shoulder and the North-South traffic was constant. I thumbed from the Greenville bum line sign outside Sikes Hall to US15 in three hours and took three hours to go the approx. 30 miles to Walterboro where 15 met 17-A. It was a whole lot easier when I was a Rat than later.

Walker Road from 23 to 378. Then East on 378. Turn next to the old store on the right past Cuffytown Creek. That road takes you to abbeville.
