Garrett Riley didn't recruit Klubnik or Vizzina. Neither is the running threat

that he wants in his offense.
With a mobile Chris Denson that Riley seems fond of and a big fast Tait Reynolds coming in next year and likely another year away from being in a position to contribute, does Clemson go get a portal QB with the necessary skillset for this offense to provide competition at the QB position and keep Riley around for another year?

I believe Riley is gone.
But I don't believe our struggles are on him.

The Clemson offense is Garrett Riley’s offense.
CK2 was thought to be a major threat as a running QB around which the RPO was expected to be lethal. Our coaching staff (I am confident that ‘the boss’ made this errant skills assessment) clearly extrapolated CK2’s superior linear speed as being powerful enough to either (1) offset CK2’s lack of shiftiness and tackle-breaking ability -or- (2) failed epically by not recognizing his lack of shiftiness & tackle breaking potential.
Remember, G.Riley was brought in before G.Riley was hired. CK2, as a minimally assessed QB by other teams (remember, CK2’s only significant PT in 2022 season was against SYR, UNC, and TN. CK2’s running success was largely from taking off quickly at the first whiff of potential pass pressure; his scrambling success against defenses that had minimally scouted him and essentially were unprepared to game plan against him. Thus, there was a small body of evidence for incoming OC G.Riley to see.
It all (likely) adds up to both Dabo and G.Riley believing that CK2 could be developed into an OK tackle breaker via Clemson’s S&C program. They both had apparently convinced themselves that shiftiness was not necessary if the QB could break tackles (the big brute DJU was hard to bring down and got a lot of key yards-after-contact) and was fast (CK2 is arguably the fastest straight line QB of the Dabo era).
Sidebar: CK2 is effective in WB draw plays. Those plays prize fast running QBs; shiftiness is always good, but a fast takeoff and getting linear downfield yards before the Safeties converge has been effective. QB draws, though, are situational plays to be run occasionally, whereas RPO is a mainstay of the Dabo era ‘Clemson offense.’
xxxxxxxx
The jury is back and the verdict is in. CK2 never became a tackle breaker of significance (although he isn’t brought down by potential sack-happy DEs in the past two years as he was back in 2023) and his lack of shiftiness rendered CK2 as being minimally useful as a RPO threat.
That neither Dabo nor G.Riley had figured that out by the start of the 2025 season -or- (worse) they lacked the coaching skills to adjust the ‘Clemson offense’ to minimize the RPO because CK2 was not effective enough running RPO plays -or- G.Riley lacked the courage to argue his convictions (I.e., that the RPO plays needed to be dramatically curtailed for 2025 season) to insist that 2025 offense needed to greatly curtailed RPO play calls.
Whatever, we’ve seen the awful results of our 2025 run game.
G.Riley needs to go.

Hmmm…
Riley was very familiar with Klubnik from recruiting high schools in Texas. And he knew Klubnik was his QB here when he took the job.

The so called air raid offense which is at the heart of Garrett Riley is NOT a running QB philosophy. You guys need to quit dreaming stuff up.

offense. In his best year with a trip to the National Championship, his QB ran 137 times for 423 yards and 9 TDs. His QB has been the second leading rusher in attempts the last three years.
Though Cade had a good year last year running the ball, he has struggled at it this year and our offense has struggled along with it. Vizzina appears to be even less of a runner than Cade.
Blake Hebert and Tait Reynolds are both big fast guys. He recently referred to Chris Denson as electric.
A QB who can be a running threat in the RPO game or when a play breaks down is obviously his preference.

They were both nationally rated QBs as run/pass QBs in high school.
He was Heisman candidate and first round draft candidate before the season and the problem is he can't run the plays Riley wants to call?
Then Riley is the problem...

Klubnik won State Championships in Texas Track, didn't he?
How is he not a running threat?

Cade Klubnik is the fastest QB of the entire Dabo era. His straight line speed is better than that of many DBs. His straight line speed doesn’t equate to shiftiness. His medium scale balance (his balance is good, but nothing like star dual threat QBs in P4 schools) is not predicted from assessment of straight line speed.
I’m quite confident that he was a star track performer in the 200 meter or 800 meter relay. Maybe both. I’m not as confident of whether he also ran the 100 and garnered the same accolades.

Go down to your local High School. Go to the Track field and ask the fastest player to put on football gear and run in them. Now match him against someone of similar size and weight who's played football for years catching/running with a ball and getting tackled. Watch said football player dust track guy every time. Track speed only goes so far in pads and with someone coming to tackle you. Theres a reason Usain Bolt doesn't hold every receiving record in the NFL. That isn't even accounting what a QB needs to do/process. Fast doesnt mean good. At QB thats a minor piece of the puzzle at best unless the person is truly gifted. Cade isn't, at least not where he needs to be. I'm sure he's a great kid, but after 3 full years I've yet to see a great QB.
