Observations and opinions

Nov 5, 2022, 11:47 PM

From my couch tonight (admittedly), here is my take on tonight’s game:

1) This Notre Dame team lost on that same field to Marshall and Stanford

2) We had two weeks to prepare, and our offensive game plan was the Rob Spence sideways passing offense. Hard to watch.

3) We no longer move pre-snap on defense. We line up, wait for the snap, and then ask our guys to out talent the opponent. This works sometimes. But there is little blitz package and no adjustments. That ND line ran all over what is supposedly an all-NFL front four. If that’s the case, then we were way out-coached in scheme and execution.

4) You can’t wait that late to play Cade…. Put him in at the 10, and then bench him after the pick. We had zero points in three quarters. Don’t kill his confidence. DJ threw a pick six the next series, yet we sent him back out. Cade’s pick was on a rollout to the left which is asinine anyway.

5) It’s tough to swallow knowing Chad Morris is done, Jeff Scott and Tony Ellliot’s teams are still around

Agree with most of what you're saying. One disagreement. Imho, if you go back and watch cades int, it was on Ngata. Ngata was lazy waiting for the ball. You have to fight for it. I really don't blame Cade for throwing it. The receivers have to position themselves to block the backer. Ngata doesn't do that for Cade or DJ.

But you're right, Cade is quick and decisive but the coaches didn't gameplan to his strength. We talked for 2 weeks how to beat ND on our Tnet couch. The coaches didn't get the memo.

First I lay alot of this on Tony Elliot.... This dink and dunk passing does not get the job done and the ok lets stuff it thru the 1 hole all the time doesnt work always..... Jet sweeps have been forgotten, they didnt run a delayed run till the 4th quarter.

The next people i blame is our recievers.. they look like they are in slow motion alot of times and doesnt seem like they are giving it all with there speed and lazy rout running.

Third DJ has to be more accurate or either you need to put Cade in and be done with it. The interception in the redzone was plainly on him tonight. He also needs to make better decisions on these run option plays... at least 3 plys tonight in the first half alone he should have kept the ball and got the 1 or 2 yards instead of giving it to his RB to let them get hit behind the line. I truelly think he got the money and is now to afriad to play hardnose football.

Fourth our defense cant carry us every game. But there was so many missed reads and missed talkes becuase people dont wrap up anymore.... where the hell did this lunging block style tackling come from. If we done that when i was playing in highschool we were doing burpeies or stairs till we puked. But this is all over the league.

Fifth Dabo needs to let changes happen. DC personally didnt know what to do tonight and it was evident becuase he ran the same defensive alignment for about everydrive. Delayed blitz and a stay at home defense like for a triple option would have taken the tightends out of the picture and allowed for more people to fill holes better. But our edge rushers were try to under cut to get isnde and it never worked. noone was staying home... we had penetration the whole first half but they were not going to the ball they were going to a spot on the field... this is all coaching issues.

OC needs to open the Fing playbook and stretch the field more... this compact style has not worked for us since the 80's and even then we still lived on big plays to help us.. Stretch the field and it will open the running game when its not there early.

OK rant over.
