Ruthless Dabo.......
Oct 23, 2022, 10:24 AM
|
|
Yesterday, we saw what I like to call the "ruthless" side of Dabo. Benching DJ and putting in Cade was a gutsy---but necessary---change.
He's made these kinds of adjustments in the past....and he's done it the right way.
DJ had an off day, no question. But, he's still our starter. I would look to see more of Cade situationally as the season progresses---but he still makes some bad decisions that he's got to clean up.
Anyway, hats off to Dabo. We have a very real chance to run the table.

The one where he almost threw a pick yesterday. That one. And I'm not referring to just yesterday.

Proud of Cade yesterday. But the sickness on him. If you get a minute, listen to Blackledge explain why. The lineman had the block. Cade just went the wrong way. No sweat though. He will learn. I agree. I think we won the game because of him. It made Streeter go run heavy, which was working and continued to work, versus passing, which could have worked but was not working.

Yep. That is the whole concept of a “pocket”. The O lineman blocked the defender to the outside and would have kept him outside and behind the pocket where you expect the QB to step up. Cade tried to run around the end of the pocket and the defender was blocked right into him. That works more often in high school and not as well in college due to the speed of most defenses. This is the development that should happen as Vade gets more experience.

Yes, he outran the block. He will continue to have "rookie" mistakes or "growing pains" such as this until he's had enough playing time to work them out. Every player has these kind of mistakes early on. Even our generational type talented players. It's a normal part of the developmental process.

He played and the first two were run plays. He corrected a lot of that later when evaded the rush and threw that strike to NgatA for the two point conversion.

Block was not missed, Cade has to step inside the blocker

By continuing to run outside in that situation Cade did not use his blocker correctly.
If you watched the broadcast a former college and pro QB, Todd Blackledge, made this very point.

People like you are insufferable. This is a football board. Cade still has much to learn. If you can't grasp that, then just ignore and go pump orange sunshine elsewhere.

He won the #### game. Give him a break…
He would have lost the game if the Cuse DB did not have hands of stone. A reasonable person would conclude the Cuse DB lost the game instead of Cade won the game.

The one of his 4 pass attempts that was very nearly a pick six would be the most obvious one. Just because the defender dropped it doesn’t make it the right decision.

Didn’t say Cade had a terrible game. Just said he want perfect and didn’t win the game single-handedly either. There is a lot of grey area in this world and this game. Not as black and white as you are making it.

DJ quote in his interview, "Shout out to Cade man, HE won that football game for us today."
I get your point that he didn't do it alone but Cade was the spark that made the difference in the fourth quarter when we were down 11. Without him coming in when he did, we don't win that game.

The point is the guy saying Cade made no bad decisions. He wasn’t perfect. He should become a great player but he’s got some room to grow. As I said before - yesterday was a great situation to get him some meaningful playing time. The pressure was not on him to win the game throwing the ball and he is a better natural runner than DJ. It was obvious we could run the ball on Syracuse so the situation fit the change perfectly. It might open up the possibility for more situational playing time for Cade like if we have a lead and need to run the ball and run the clock like the second half game plan yesterday. Great move and plan by the coaching staff. Doesn’t mean it should be a permanent change.

He almost threw a pick-6 that was dropped.
Cade did nothing yesterday to earn the starting spot. He ran once or twice for decent yardage and the rest was Mafah and Shipley.
Hats off to the kid but he has a ton of work to do before he is ready to be a full-time starter at this level.

You said “he won the ### game”. He didn’t win the game. The team won the game. He did his part but also wasn’t perfect. He did make a couple of bad decisions.

Ummmm trying to escape around the end when he had a clean pocket!!! That’s high school stuff that you can get away with in high school but not in college! He tries it several times vs Furman I think…there are times when it’s the right move but not every time…something he will learn and get better at very easily iah!!!

This was the perfect situation to get Cade some meaningful playing time. He didn’t need to be an all-world passer and he is a more natural runner than DJ. It was obvious in the second half that our plan was to run the ball and run the clock because Syracuse just couldn’t stop our running game. And we don’t really know how much of a factor the cut/scrape on DJ’s hand was.

…….and the results bare that out. One of my favorite things about sports is, when done correctly, it’s about merit. You gotta earn it. To his great credit, DJ said as much himself. That’s a TEAM MAN and a TRUE LEADER, you can win with that. A TRUE LEADER is about the people he is leading, not himself. Very proud of DJ’s comments, good on you man.
We’ll take the “W” and move on.

A bad decision made quickly is often superior to a good one made too late. That saying sums up the difference between these two QBs. Cade has huge upside, but the difference is the speed of his feet and decision making. That will never get better for DJ. CK2 will get the hang of the passing game. He vastly improves our run game just by stepping on the field.

I wouldn’t call him ruthless. I think most coaches would have pulled DJ after the first series to start the 3rd quarter when it was clear he just didn’t have it yesterday and a fresh start coming out of the half wasn’t going to help.
I think Dabo gave him longer rope than most other coaches would have.
Cade coming in was great because it forced us to really stay dedicated to running the ball which had been working all day.
