Mike Turico just had a scary thought.

Talking about the PGA/LIV merger.
He was asked about what this means now that PIF (the money behind LIV) was now heavily involved in American sports. (They are already heavily involved in the Premier League and Formula 1.)
He started brainstorming. I don't think his comments were planned. But, here is what he said. (close paraphrase)
"Who knows where it will go? Will they get involved in the LPGA? What if they decide to become the NIL agent for college golf?...What if they decide to partner with the SEC and become the NIL and marketing agency for the SEC?...Who knows where this is going?"
Once again, he wasn't predicting it. He was just speaking off the cuff pointing out that no one has any idea where this is heading.

Sports is becoming nothing more than a big money-hungry

racket. It's been a big money thing for decades - everybody knows that. But it's traditionally been family owners, individual owners, etc. Now large corporations and even countries are getting in to it?? It's no longer a sport that's also a business. It's a business that happens to be a sport, and the goal is not to win championships or to put a high quality product out there - it's to make as much money as possible for the investors. That's my 2 cents, anyway. But what do I know. I can't even afford YouTubeTV anymore, much less a sports team.

I've always thought that marketing executives at ESPN, who

care a lot more about marketing than they do the purity of sport, are a part of the problem with sports. They don't trust that a sport is in and of itself a worthy thing to show. They have to pizzazz it up, add bells and whistles. That's why it's not enough to turn on the tv to watch a good game. They have to cram down your throat why it's the most important, most emotional, most impactful game ever. After a while, it drains the fan. Who can keep up that level of intensity?
Anyway, the idea that sophisticated corporations can effectively own a sport kind of goes that way too. Please...I think we all know that all sports are big business. But, like, MLB grew into what it is now. Along the way there are baseball people running baseball teams and a baseball league. Baseball matters. What happens when a corporation basically says that "here is something we can make a lot of money on...some sport." How important is it to be pure? If a specific player or team winning will optimize revenue, isn't that the best business outcome? Why wouldn't you ensure that that is what happens? I mean, it's what the optimum demographic of the consumers want anyway. The customer's always right.

And you can put lipstick on that pig all you want and claim it's to benefit the student athletes/players but we know it's all about the investors as you laid it out.

What if they bought the ACC rights from ESPN and started paying more than what ESPN pays the SEC? Would they then be good guys?

Not sure why the Saudis would have interest in American college sports

Right now at least. The reason they are getting big into soccer, is because of the worldwide element of it.
But it is true that they are putting the money into sports more and more. They have tried the same with tennis that they did with the LIV tour. They are buying more and more European soccer clubs, tying and succeeding to get huge stars to come to the Saudi league. Making a hard push for the 2030 World Cup etc.
But I don’t see them putting their claws into American football for now

The Saudis have deeper pockets than anyone. They basically can get into anything if they desire. Just saw a report that basically said the PGA golfers now have little respect for their commissioner. They stuck by the PGA while others deserted and made hundreds of millions in the LIV. Now he is embracing LIV and they got nothing. Bad blood there now. He won't remain as commissioner for much longer I don't think.

They have "deeper pockets than anyone" and can "get into anything if they desire". OK then, Why? if a family or town or even corporation buys into a team or franchise it seems to me they are doing it for the love of the sport, the town, the history or whatever. But more importantly, the return on their investment. The Saudis have absolutely no concern about their ROI. Well, maybe a little concern. But they're not doing it to make a living that's for sure. So why? Why the interest in golf, soccer or F1 racing? The Saudis always have an agenda.....always. Wonder what that is?

Everyone has an agenda, not just the Saudis.

Sounds like Phillips needs to get to work and get the money to the ACC instead of the SEC. That's just the way it is these days.

Name an entity that has more money than the Saudis. Also, enough money can buy anything except salvation. The Saudis can buy it and get involved in it.
