What did Herbstreit say about 10 and 2?

Couldn't quite make out everything Herbstreit said on Gameday. What did he say about hands at 10 and 2? The article thread was also locked unfortunately.

I think his point was about black people having to keep hands in clear view when pulled over by police.

I didn't see it live either.

Back 48 years ago when I got my DL we were taught to keep our hands at 10 - 2 on the wheel when driving and on the wheel if pulled over until the officer asked you to. This was reiterated during CWP certification class because of a potential weapon. Follow the D*A*M*N rules.

Turn off the engine, Lower your windows, put your left arm on the window sill where it can be seen and put your right hand on top of the steering wheel.

You never reach into the glove compartment or middle console, even though that may be where your information is.

Keep your head up and maintain eye contact in your mirrors.

Do this and the result has a better chance of being positive.

Yes, and don’t resist arrest and go for your or the cop’s weapon

Apparently that’s too hard for some people.

Kinda like showing ID to vote. Extremely difficult, so I hear.

That's right! When you are pulled over for a traffic violation no matter what race you are technically under arrest I thought. Even ticket says "arresting officer". Tickets I have had always had a place for them to note your conduct too. Don't want to go into traffic court with a nasty attitude or failure to stop noted on mine. I never argue or get an attitude. That's what court is for.

I do that when I am pulled over. I also tell the officer if I am opening the glove compartment. I say yes sir or yes ma'am and I do everything they say.

Yep, cops just shoot law abiding people because of their skin color. It never has anything to do with not acting in a respectful manner, following instructions, or being a known felon acting like an idiot.

Your comment is totally ridiculous. Hopefully you have more common sense than you comment eludes too because I have a feeling your next interaction with authority probably won't go in your favor. Just saying!

I’m white, so no, I don’t know what it feels to be a black person being stopped by the police and I won’t pretend to. That said when I am pulled over I keep my seatbelt on, hands on top of the steering wheel until the cop comes over. Then I ask permission to undo my seatbelt and to reach into the glove box. I don’t see how this is a problem or why it’s not good advice for everyone to to it.

Yes i was stopped last year and even asked if it was OK to open my overhead bin to get my proof of insurance card when I was asked for it.

How often do you get pulled over?

Probably 6 or 7 times in 20 or so years. I tend to drive fast. I was stopped last year by a state trooper (while driving the speed limit) because I was at the end of a cigar and the cop thought it was weed. We had a good laugh at that one.

White guy here and I have lots of police friends.
I polled them and they suggest.
Rolling down your window, putting both hands outside window where they can be seen, look directly at the officer and have them start the conversation.
I have a concealed carry and I immediately report I am carrying and where the gun is located. (They already know this as it is in your record when looking up your tag). This creates a bit of trust.
Then go from there.
I teach my kids to do this, don’t give them attitude, mouth, hard time, simply do what they request without attitude.
If you treat them right, you will sometimes get the benefit of the doubt.
I don’t get the resisting arrest by some of these criminals. Should not be a death sentence, but why do it?

Like you, I've been pulled over several times for speeding, etc... usually legit, but a couple of times I think they were just trying to make quota. Either way, I'm always polite, and compliant. Once or twice I even got off with a warning.

But, I've also been arrested (for fights, disorderly conduct, etc... when I was younger). I've had police try to intimidate me, point a gun at me for no good reason, and threaten to kick my ### even though I never contemplated resisting arrest.

I'm a white guy.

Your fault then.

All cops are good, none are dirty and never get aggressive and step over the line. Ever.

Spoken like a "perp"...lol!

The only thing I don't like about a few of them is that they seem to be on a power trip. Like they got beat up on the playground too many times so they now overcompensate by raising "bullies" for kids and acting like full time peckerwoods. I think they have a hard job, and most of them are just trying to do it.

P.s. I've been cut slack by a few cops who helped me out when they didn't need to and kept me from ultimately being charged, probably because I was polite to them (back when I was an 18-23 yrs old).

I've had good interactions with cops for the most part.

I had one guy on a power trip, I just shut and let him enjoy himself.

Most of my experiences though, I learned through my mom who was a Deputy. She couldn't believe how corrupt some of her fellow deputies were. More than anything, even the drug use and stealing, she was appalled how they treated inmates, etc. Totally uanessacry actions.

After several years, she called it quits.

top of the steering wheel and don't do anything until the officer tells you. If you have to get something out of the glove box (i.e. proof of insurance/registration) inform the officer where the item is located and only go for it when the officer instructs you to.

Above all - don't argue with an officer at the scene even if you believe the officer is in the wrong. Nothing good will come out of it because you will never win an argument with a law officer at the site of an incident. Stay respectful, document what you can, as there will be time where you can argue your side of the story at the station and/or with a lawyer in a courtroom.
