The ACC is in a really tough spot

If either USF or UNT win out and win the American… and JMU wins out to win the Sun Belt…

The only way the ACC gets in the playoff is if GT or PITT win the league. If anyone else wins it, the ACC WILL NOT get a CFP bid.

Will be interesting to see how the officials and league handle that. Ironically, SDSU lost last nights helps the conference a little, b/c it’s one less G5 to deal with.

Outside of missing a piece of the money pie from a playoff representative, screw the ACC. This conference deserves its lashings and should dissolve and split apart. The national view of the ACC can't get any better or worse than it is currently. It's a laughing stock conference nationally, filled with programs that can't or won't become a national contender that the conference needs them to be. Most of the fanbases are small or non-existent and filled with apathy for football in general these days. That's a recipe for disaster in that alone. Then the actual programs that do care about football (VT, FSU, Miami, Louisville, GT, UVA) have fallen off in the worst ways possible the last 10-20 years and just sprinkle in a year here and there with decent to good seasons.

Automatic qualifiers goes to the 5 highest rated conference champions. That includes G5 champions too. So if USF or North Texas finish ranked higher than the ACC Champion then we are not given an auto bid.

Here is the answer I think I understand it?

Explaining the College Football Playoff automatic qualifiers

Unlike college basketball’s NCAA tournament, automatic bids won’t be given to every conference champion for the CFP. For FBS, automatic spots will be given to the five highest-ranked conference champions — no matter the conference. Those five AQs are dependent on how the CFP selection committee ranks conference champions in the top 25.

If the fifth-highest ranked conference champion is ranked outside of the top-12, it will still make it into the college football playoff. In other words, even if the fifth-highest-ranked conference champion is ranked No. 18 in the final CFP top 25 rankings, that team will be the No. 12 seed as that last automatic qualifier.

I believe in theory the ACC could be left out?

This is rule #1, copied and pasted, from the link that you obviously didn't click on. Nothing is said about which conferences. I'll agree with one poster that I think that it is unlikely that 2 G5 conferences are ranked over the ACC, but we are not guarantee a bid as a conference.

The ACC champion is not guaranteed to get into the CFP. The rules are set up so that its overwhelmingly likely that the ACC champion gets in, but it is not guaranteed. The rule, which has been posted in this thread numerous times and seems to be getting ignored, states that the "5 highest rated conference champions" get guaranteed bids. Nowhere does it specify which conferences those have to be.
