No Tigers in the NFL -- a conspiracy against Clemson?

Why are there no "Tigers" in the NFL? There are numerous other teams with feline-related names -- Bengals, Panthers, Jaguars, and Lions. But no Tigers? Why? Yet another organization conspiring against Clemson?

History of NFL names.

Not all of them, but some were decided based on the name of the baseball team in the city.
Chicago Cubs, so football team became Bears.
Detroit Tigers, so football team became Lions.
NY Giants football team took on the same name as the baseball team (NY Giants before they moved to SF.)
Side Note: The original name of the NY Jets in the old AFL was NY Titans (a play on Giants).
Not that I have answered your question, but you're question rattled my brain. I think new teams tend to try and be unique and not pick a name used by several teams. (There are no Bulldogs, Wildcats, Hawks - well, seahawks which are really ospreys)

I'd always heard the same thing about the Bulls. Due to the Chicago Stock Exchange and the city's existing "Bears" football mascot they went with Bulls for the basketball team in order to represent both a "Bear" and "Bull" market. The story may be complete BS (pun intended) but it sounds good.
