Never been a soccer fan, just didn't grow up with

it. But really enjoyed watching the videos of the celebrations and how many fans we had up there.
I do remember the first title. I.M. Ibrahim personally asked dad if he would call the Final 4 on radio. Dad was like me, and knew nothing about the game. He told coach as such, that he'd love to be a part of it, but would have no idea how to call it. I do remember listening to the game with him, and celebrating the win with a cold one. He joked he didn't get to call the first titles on the radio in football or futball ??

Did not realize Jim was your dad. I grew up listening to him on the radio. He was awesome and have missed him. Think about him everytime I’m listening to a game on the radio!

He was our soundtrack for a long time. Big big part of my memories of Clemson football and basketball. I shed quite a few tears when he passed.

Don’t seem like 20. You know back in the day there wasn’t many on tv. Dad and myself listened to all that wasn’t on tv and sometimes we just turned the volume down on the tv and watched it and listened to Jim. Who was in the booth with him? All I remember is your dad.

Changed a lot over the years
Dec 12, 2021, 9:18 PM
|

Former Associate SID Jerry Arp did games for a while. DJ out of Greenville Scott Shannon. Ken Allison who posts here some for several years. Former recruiting director under Danny, Clyde Wrenn and Tim Bourret were a team for several years. When Bob Bradley retired Tim had to move on to those duties. Mike Eppley several years. Rodney on the sidelines those years. Tim did all the basketball with him. Bob Mahoney baseball.

Bourrett is still around and I remember Eppley and Rodney. Some of those other guys I would probably remember their voices but the names do not ring a bell. Except for Bradley. That name I remember as well.

Had no idea he helped call anything for radio. Got to know him pretty good in a former life 20-25 years ago. Loved his stories from back in the day. Talk about an interesting guy, and a great guy too. Wonder how he’s doing now. Got to be on up in age.

Well, like most, I grew up listening to your dad every Saturday. Grew up on a small farm in the Pee Dee with no cable or satellite. There would be maybe 2 or 3 games a year on TV, so every Saturday was spent with a radio on listening to Jim Phillips. Remember having to give my Dad score updates, or having a radio on close by while working.
Lot of work back then but good memories.

Had to choose a typical Cliff December game ??

I didn’t know he was your Dad either. Back when every game wasn’t televised nationally his voice was synonymous with Clemson football. The two things I remember most on the radio back then was your Dad and Leonard’s Losers. Simpler times. You know he was smiling down on the soccer team today too.

the TV. You could scan the dial and know exactly who was playing by the voice. Fulton, Munson, Woody Durham, Al Ciraldo at Tech, Caywood Ledford at Kentucky, Bob Harris at Duke. Only real link to those guys now is Gene Deckerhoff at FSU, who by the way was dad's family paper boy in Mineral Ridge, OH

Jim walked in to the conference room, didn’t really acknowledge me but asked where I ‘d gotten those beautiful, large & custom framed art pieces and then he walked out to head home since after 9pm.l

Likely the TV station ad he was still sports director there then. Though radio was right beside it. If he was leaving at 9 he likely had to be back at 11 for the late night newscast

a Bob Fulton anecdote
Dec 12, 2021, 9:51 PM
|
|
So I live in the midlands and ran into Bob Fulton when he was still with us. Got to talking to him and he found out I was a Clemson alum and listened to Jim on the radio when I was growing up. Fulton was effusive about your dad and said not only did he represent the best of Clemson nation but the best in his profession across the country. The respect he had for Jim was overflowing in that conversation.

Dad and Bob were extremely close
Dec 12, 2021, 10:02 PM
|
|
when dad died the idea came to me to have Bob speak at the funeral. Then it was like, wait a minute, let's have him call a drive on the radio at the game that Saturday. Bob had been retired 10 years by that point and was nervous as all get out about it. Whitehurst took the team right down the field for a TD. I still remember all the fans in front of the radio booth not watching the game, but rather Bob in the booth call a Clemson game with grins on their faces and radios on.
Dad honored Bob at his last game in 1994 at the game in Clemson at halftime. Turns out due to that Bob missed calling that screwy kickoff return they had that year.
Bob returned the favor after dad died in 2003. That was 63-17 ??

memory. Just an incredible outpouring of love from Tiger Nation. We literally received tens of thousands of messages from fans across the country. The university did everything we asked. I joke I ran the school for that week. That Saturday game was just a true life celebration. Exactly has he would have wanted it. Some tears, but mostly, celebrating a life well lived. He truly considered himself blessed to have wound up at Ckemson

Handle was the Chesterfiel county Creek ?? we made some good friends up there. To many done passed on. I miss living in the country. Hoping whenever we move next time it's out if the city for sure. And I remember how hard it was to find games on the radio up there, lol. I used to listen on a station out of Sumter.
We're doing well. Likely transitioning out of here over the next year.

Loved your dad. When I would be beside the ole stereo floor model console listing to Clemson football , the way Jim would call the game was like you were there. You could see it in your mind. I will always remember how he called a field goal. “ we are awaiting the snap, the spot, his kick is up and his kick isssssss Good !!! Ariri hits a 51 yarder with 3 minutes and 12 seconds to go before the half. So with a timeout on the field , the score Clemson 24 ……..insert opponent here 0”

He felt pretty much like everyone else
Dec 13, 2021, 7:06 AM
|
|
That Max Lennon didn't like the power Danny had and took advantage of the conflict.
One thing dad did was support the coaches, that's why they trusted him. Dad taught Danny a lot about dealing with the media, especially early in Danny's career when Danny didn't know much. They were professional friends. But when Hatfield became the coach, he supported him. It really upset him how some fans treated Hatfield. Not that they didn't like the losing, but the vicious attacks. All Ken did was take a better job and learn the hard way don't replace a legend.
He was close to a lot of coaches, mostly the ones who really came under fire like Tommy West, Larry Shyatt as he became a confidant. But also he and Bill Wilhelm loved each other. A lot of the hoops coaches. Bobby Robert's, Bill Foster, even Tates. The guy that Stumped him was Barnes. He loved Rick. That move shocked him as much as any.

Great story. Sweet memory. Some of us were bopping around then ( though with a little more spring in our step).

I have very little soccer experience. But I do know that it takes an incredible skill set and unbelievable stamina to play the game. I watched some amazing feats of athleticism during the recap video.
Congratulations to you Tiger champions. You've made us proud in a year when we needed to celebrate. Thank you.

Best shape I was ever in in my life. As you get more experienced you learn to play your position which is still a ton of running but better than it was when I was really young. Kids just all chase the ball. It’s hilarious to watch but they got to start somewhere.
