Very simply, when you pay massive amounts of money to kids with no threat of bringing in competition if they don’t perform, you don’t get to act surprised when they give little effort and don’t develop. No fear of reprisal breeds a lack of accountability. The portal is the counter-weight to NIL.

Yes because Miami, Ohio State, and Oregon are all having huge issues getting their players ready to go on Saturday.

You didn’t comprehend OPs message. If you pay but that player has no competition to fight for his job, he becomes complacent. No iron to sharpen iron

Good grief. If a poor walk on can beat out this phantom entitled NIL'er , they'll play him instead. Sorry if i'm being a jerky but I listened to this nonsense all weekend long from my sister. It not the way that works.

In a merit-based system, yes. That’s how it works. In an entitlement culture where it takes an act of congress to pull under-performing NIL talent off the field, not so much. The large payments become incentive to play the paid athletes similar to first round players in the other professional league.
This is not college football as we knew it. Refusing to use the portal while paying NIL blows the productivity curve by pushing the curve towards entitlement and away from fear.

Portal transfer Tristan Smith, fresh off catching 76 passes at small college, transferred into Clemson and has performed well, yet is receiving less snaps than 3rd year coaching favorite Cole Turner.

How do you explain other programs that are winning games while using the portal/NIL? I understand your premise but it only holds water if portal/NIL heavy programs we're also losing games. Lets face facts, NIL isnt the reason our players can't tackle, our Dline gets no pressure (aside from our 1 portal addition), or our QB is playing below average. This is on coaching. 4 plus years of below average production by Clemson standards is a trend beyond the paychecks players take home.

I’m not positing that the issues with Clemson football aren’t multi-factorial. Clearly, they are. My point is that you can’t remove accountability with blind loyalty and pay players with no threat of replacement if they don’t perform and expect a positive effect on culture and performance. It doesn’t work that way in any industry, including football.

It may be time to call a player(s) blufft and if no performance then no play.
If he or they threaten to leave then show them the door.
Always let them know this up front and let them know they are dispensable.

No evidence that more than a few players are receiving "massive amounts of money" and if NIL is not affecting other schools, and our players are letting it affect them, then they are not the quality people we thought they were. If players are not smart enough to realize that NFL GMs approve players based on character, they will when they drop like lead balloons in the draft.

This is DEI in college football, you get paid you don't have to produce you just jump in portal if you get benched and the next team will pay you to not produce. College Football is now WOKE

for not playing well. That would change attitudes some for sure.
OR at least just limit transfers to one time in a career.

I have said for years now that BV leaving was the worst thing that could happen to our offense because they had to work against his maniacal defense every day.
