New Story: Jeff Scott: "We've got to put our guys in position to execute"

Oct 19, 2017, 8:01 AM

Jeff Scott: "We've got to put our guys in position to execute"

Through six games, the Clemson offense was among the nation’s leaders in third-down conversion percentage at 49.2 percent, good for 11th-best in the nation. That stat took a hit against Syracuse, and Jeff Scott says there are a few reasons why. Photo by Rich Barnes / USATODAY

Agree with coach Scott our players need to be in position to execute. It's always that way. Hope they are ready to accomplish that against Tech.

Cain has had some drops that were catchable and doesnt always fight for the ball as agressively as he should.

Everything that went wrong, could.

And Cain could have bailed his team out multiple times. Disappointing.

We were at the Carrier Dome 90 minutes before kickoff. It was very obvious KB could not run without a very noticeable limp and he could not cut at all. I'm sure Syracuse scouted his condition during our warmups. KB should NOT have played and BOTH backup QBs should have been ready to play and need to be READY FOR ALL REMAINING GAMES. All we needed was one good play on offense to spark both offense and defense. Coach V did NOT have our D ready. They were not even set on many snaps and consistently got pushed around. CW and DL got manhandled most of the night. DL looked gassed all night. Was he sick? All of CDS's talk about not liking to play on Friday night and looking forward to the open date filtered down to the coaches and players who thought all they had to do was get off the bus. "On any given day" as the saying goes is still true. Dino had his team ready. CDS did NOT have his team ready.

We had great plays on both offense and defense , not sure what game you were watching .
The problems we had were in execution on 1st downs , getting off the field on 3rd downs and a few mistakes in blocking assignments and secondary breakdowns .

KINDA FUNNY THE VIDEO DAVID HOOD SHOWED ON TIGERNET DURING WARMUPS SHOWED ZERO LIMP. AS CRIPPLE AS HE WAS HOW DID HE COMPLETE HIS FIRST 9 PASSES. HE TWEAKED THE ANKLE AT SOME POINT AFTER THAT AND WAS LIMPING FOR SURE. I WOULD BET MY LEFT ONE THAT HAD HE NOT BEEN SLAMMED TO THE TURF HE WOULD NOT HAVE PLAYED THE 2ND HALF REGARDLESS. THAT HAPPENED RIGHT BEFORE THE HALF IF YOU REMEMBER.

There was no limp in warmups. Syracuse players were deliberately gunning for his ankle. You can see replays of Cuse players twisting and stomping on his ankle after the whistles blew on several plays.

Oct 21, 2017, 6:15 PM [ in reply to Re: New Story: Jeff Scott: "We've got to put our guys in position to execute" ]

What job description is, and how the coaches use it, it ends up being a multiple assortment, and what they aren't doing, is finding what works best and make team stop it bc when they do, it opens other holes all over the field. With the talent that we do have, other teams should be kept to guessing, and when they are guessing, they are in a soft coverage D, that talent can exploit it!!!

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Playing a mobile QB who is injured will do that to 3rd down conversion %.

Oct 19, 2017, 9:46 AM

I watched the game again recently and the turning point was late in the first. We had a third and short, Bryant had a wide open sideline to get the first down (and probably more) but he pulled up and ran out of bounds for almost no gain.

That play (and the fact that Bryant was not 100%) changed the outcome of the game.

There's something in these hills.

that was the moment i thought it turned south too

Oct 19, 2017, 11:35 AM

I was yelling at the TV wondering why the heck he didn't try to power forward towards the 1st down marker. I knew he was limping but it was more about him lowering the shoulder and powering through. After that, Cuse smelled the blood in the water and attacked him all night and blitzed like their life depended on it. They knew he couldn't do what he normally does.

I'm not as mad as others about keeping KB in the game bc up until that moment he was doing fine. However he did take a shot to his ankle a play or two before he got knocked out with a concussion. I think if we made it to halftime that KB wouldn't have played the second half anyways bc of that shot to his ankle but you never know how it could have turned out if he played the full game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dino is a smart coach, and said he was going to stop the run

Oct 19, 2017, 4:09 PM

as the announcers quoted him at first of game. KB should have been taken out then, I really don't understand the coaches leaving him in, with a hurt ankle like that which made the Tigers much easier to defend.

Re: New Story: Jeff Scott: "We've got to put our guys in position to execute"

Oct 19, 2017, 9:51 AM

We have one of the best running back and receiving corps across the board in college FB. And we should get them and keep them all involved through out the entire game. For us to keep opposing defenses guessing where we are going with the ball, all of our play makers must be involved from the RBs, our TEs, to our broad WRs selection! When a defense is kept guessing, it's much easier to get them and keep them on their heels. Also, the play calling must never fall into a pattern on any given down or the situation of the down. Like now with our play calling, if opposing defenses played us for the run on first down through out a game, 97% of the time they will be right!!! I think that Tony and Jeff should spend more time at not letting our offense get into habits with our play calling, work more on confusing DCs from week to week.

Would someone please ask the coaches how many QBs are they prepping to the point that they feel confident they can win with? Because, the last time they took the field, that number was zero. Do we have a contingency to win regardless of who is in as QB?

Re: New Story: Jeff Scott: "We've got to put our guys in position to execute"

Oct 19, 2017, 12:10 PM

All that coach speaking gumbo jumbo is fine and dandy bc they have learned from some of the best in Tommy Bowden. Looking at our roster and how loaded it is with 4 plus star talent across the board, there shouldn't ever be a time when playing a Cuse like team, we shouldn't ever struggle on 3d down at making a 1st down. With our talent, 5-10 yards should be automatic. Explaining not making but 2 of 11 first downs against Cuse should be impossible to do with any kind of wording by anybody on our staff. Even if there was a logical reason why our D couldn't stop Cuse on 3d downs, there shouldn't be anything logical about Cuse stopping our offense with the insane amount of talent on our offense, even with ZC as the QB. With the talent we have on offense, Christian Wilkins could QB a win against a Cuse team. Our OC's had just as much to do with that loss as any of our players, that is what I believe!!!

I hear what you're saying, but I think what your underestimating here with that comment is how much of a factor it is for a football team to possess intangibles. That night, Syracuse had it. And for whatever reason we had none of it (which I still don't really understand). It's quite remarkable how they were able to overcome the opposing talent they faced, I still don't get it.

Interesting that they don't know how to attack the deep zone

1. all is not broken with our offense but..
2. I like Jeff Scott, but don't tell how good Cooper played. I could go 10 for 14 throwing 5 yard passes the whole second half. use Cain now b/c he will not be here next year.
3. how many more times is the bubble screen going to get blown up before we stop calling that play?
4. we need a blocking tight end. Richard looks like a good receiver but need a tweener. maybe chalk or greenlee. Richard misses too many blocks.
5. Go Tigers. The only thing that matters is GA Tech.

One of the things I liked about, well, the only thing I liked about The Head Ball Coach, was he would jerk a #1, #2 #3 etc. QB out of a game until he found one that could get it going.
The things I like about our Tiger Coaching is they are proven winners are 100% committed and they love their players. However, like most fans, I don't understand this Quarter Back thing. Nevertheless, I trust they will get it corrected. Go Tigers.

Ian a diehard CLEMSON TIGER FAN but our offensive coordinators need to get a grip on reality KELLY BRYANTis a great athlete but not a power 5 conference starting Quarterback in the sense that he can not pass the football with good consistency great runner the ball has to be thrown downfield to completely open up that super running game for these fabulous running backs that we have i hate to say it but we will not win a national championship with him at quarterback I support him but not as a,starter all of these 4 star and 5 star receivers came here expecting and hoping to be involved in a wide open offense but it's not happening you have 2 capable quarterbacks on the bench who are much much better passers and can both run also give them a chance and also Kelly Bryant should never have been playing against Syracuse period that was the game to get those 2 guys experience and our offensive coordinators act like they don't get it a lot of the times why the hell were they throwing the football when the running game was crushing Syracuse and not only that but FEASTER and ETIENNE only carried the ball 14 times between then run the #### ball then go deep to these awesome wide receivers that you have if you are not careful they will transfer this Is the worst offense CLEMSON has had under DABO SWINNEY you recruited all of these PLAYMAKERS but you are not getting them the football keep KELLY BRYANT involved but at another position open up the playbook and let these stallions at running back and wide receiver run wild MAKES NO SENSE NOT TOO
