New hire coaching

Jul 23, 2022, 6:17 PM

I'm fascinated to see how Clemson and Miami respond to the coaching turnover both teams have experienced. What is really interesting is the contrast in coaching styles when it comes to selecting the two staffs. Dabo went mostly with promoting from within and Cristobal went after best of breed on a national scale.

Many complained about Dabo's choices so I think these two programs bear watching and perhaps we will get some insights on which philosophy turns out best.

This is comparing apples and oranges. Dabo has been running this program for 13 years and has been developing coaching talent to be ready to step up into openings. Cristobal just arrived in Miami and hasn’t had time to evaluate much less develop anyone on the existing staff. Dabo brought in outside hires for the first coordinator openings that occurred during his tenure too. I don’t really think this will be a good test of whether it is best to promote from within or hire from the outside. There are just too many other differences in the situations.

I see your point but if I follow your logic, it sounds like you would favor a comparison where we take the record of the coaches we brought from the outside (BV & CM) and compare that to how well our new staff from within performs going forward.

The comparison I was trying to make was one that addressed our fan base when Dabo was hiring. There was a camp that liked the idea of promoting from within and supporting an already established and successful culture but there was another camp that favored going out and getting big-name coordinators and coaches that would come in and conceivably raise the bar with new ideas and recruiting chops. One camp seemed to want what Dabo actually did and another camp wanted more of the way Cristobal decided to go. That is why I thought both new staffs starting out at the same time might be worth watching.

Look, I'll agree it will be interesting to see how Miami will do this year (& future years). However, your focus on coaching hire philosophy is just one factor that will make up the story. Miami will never be Clemson, or vice versa. Private vs public school. Big vs Small student environment. Big Money Donors vs. grass root donors. Character/Faith driven vs. "????", not only in coaching staffs but also in the student-athletes that choose to come to each campus. The list goes on and on. Also, as others have pointed out, Dabo also went outside internal hires (especially for his coordinators) early in his head coaching career. However, once he started to establish his program & its values, he wanted to maintain those values. Unlike many tother successful head coaches, he has put great value in staff consistency (which includes promoting from within). Coaches who recruit our student-athletes are usually around to coach & develop each of their recruiting classes. Study some of the comments of our recruits who value this approach of being coached by the same person who recruited them. Have fun with your extremely limited approach to the success of each program.
