Food for the mind and heart- history about what happened

With my family. Sort of what we do on July 4th. More than just grilling. We talk about family members that served and sacrificed for freedom and pray for our country from that angle. Will do the same for the life, liberty and pursuit of happiness not experienced by fellow Americans(enslaved) until June 19th. Besides that- who cares what we actually eat…

When I was growing up and visiting my family in rural louisiana June teenth was a recognized event. In the past when I mentioned it to folks they didn't know what I was talking about. I think it should be recognized.

Considering the state of the holiday's origin it can only be Tex-Mex.

How about a course of understanding served with a side of humility and respect?

Absolutely including respect for those who fought and died to make it happen. Freedom should be a God given right for everyone but freedom is never free and I hardly ever hear people who thank those who made it possible

I thought the president of the USA signed it as a FED holiday?

Doesn’t that make it a holiday for every state? No longer a state holiday and our senate voted yes? Aren’t those reps from every state in the union? So…. You are free to celebrate regardless of what happened state to state!!! Enjoy. Learn. Just another reason to celebrate our great country!!!

Outstanding for our great country to finally recognize the day the end of slavery was known to all. Proud of the responses in this thread thus far.

Most people here are intelligent enough to know slavery was a terrible thing throughout time. Ending it in the U.S. was certainly a mark in history that should have been further acknowledged long ago. I’m glad it is for those so long ago that endured it.

No I wasn’t going there, we have a horse show & that was what we planned to eat as a group.
But if we had watermelon I’m all good with that too.
I wasn’t being a wise guy but that’s what we were going to eat, we had bbq & tater salad for lunch, oh my goodness it was good. Mandarins chilled for desert too!!!!
