Nate Oats, Alabama Coach is religious, yet still in his youth, he clearly has not shown discipline or public speaking skill sets this season. His father, Larry, is Dean of the Seminary at Maranatha Baptist University in Watertown, Wisconsin, where Nate Oats played Division III basketball. Oats has spoken publicly about his faith which understandably has not blunted the criticism and scrutiny of his handling of Bama players.
All that said, Oats is rough around the edges like a young Rick Barnes -- he is uber-competitive and 100% about winning. Oats took over Romulus High (Wisconsin) around 2012-13 and led Romulus to its first state championship in 27 years. In 2015, Oats took over as head coach at Buffalo, which had never reached the NCAA Tournament, and led Buffalo to four straight NCAA tournament appearances during his four-year tenure.
This year Oats controversially led Alabama to the Sweet 16 for the second time in three years, behind SEC freshman of the year Miller.
I'm not pushing Oats for Clemson. Clemson could not afford him, and his Bama players have blemished his reputation (at least temporarily). I'm stating Oats is driving all these wins from his DNA, and the Brad Brownell's of the world can't compete with the Nate Oats' of the world. It's not all about money and facilities as some Tnet posters would have us believe -- it's about heart and guts as Dabo Swinney consistently demonstrates. It's up to Graham Neff to identify and recruit a coach that can create that winning environment at Clemson ... because whoever that coach is, like Coach K (who I've never liked), Dabo Swinney, and Nate Oats, some coaches cannot stomach a lack of discipline/effort and losing.
Four tourneys in a row at Buffalo (as a new coach out of high school)? And as a player, would you rather attend Clemson, play in the ACC, and jet ski on Lake Keowee, or shovel 10" of snow in Buffalo?
Some of the attached video demonstrating Oats' competitiveness in high school and at Buffalo is worth a look as a competitive benchmark to Coach Brownell. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIoAZa9n3QM

He is a great example of the type of coach Neff should be looking for. Thanks for sharing the video.

He had a player on his team who provided a gun for a murder and the POS didn't miss a game.
Character matters.
He isn't what Clemson needs.

He also thought it was a good idea to seek advice from Ray Lewis on how to handle the murderous situation and then publicly broadcast that decision. He is a win at all cost kinda guy. Not the kind of coach Clemson should want to lead our young men and women.
Heck, even Nick Saban indirectly criticized his handling of the situation.

He is following Barnes' pattern of not advancing far in NCAA

tourney... He's certainly a good coach. But the table was completely cleared for Bama to be in Vegas. And they are done. Barnes' teams also tend to make early exits and lose to lower seeds. Eventually the grumbling will happen at Bama if they don't break through.
