My Unrefined Take on NIL, Recruiting and Where Clemson Fits

NIL and Portal have caused a seismic shift in the CFB landscape and things are a changin' Though still early here is what I believe I am seeing and I think it is positive for Clemson. At a very high level NIL in conjunction with portal influence are further widening the haves and have nots creating huge potential for team and locker room dysfunction.
In his Daboesque manner this team is silently morphing it's approach without compromising it's core values to win in this new era. Here is at a high level what I am seeing.
The Crazy Big Booster Mega Spendapalooza Schools - Like TAMU and some other huge state schools just firehosing money to buy the best. Not a lot of forethought and strategy to impact on the locker room. Buying up more 4 and 5 stars than they can play or keep happy. No coaching staff in the world can manage the kids who succumb to the fast nickel.
I believe Dabo is relying on the Clemson core values "growing great men" coupled with the Clemson Branding Institute to help any player who wants/needs NIL coaching to do it in a responsible and smart way. This is of course augmented by hard NIL cash, but I think Dabo and team are still seeking real team synergy and learned some lessons in the DJU disaster that was 2021. It also appears that Clemson is picking very selectively the top kids and parents that are looking for the slow dime. I may be wrong, but I think the DJ/Big Dave experience might have been a harbinger of doom NIL/Portal will bring to CFB and this staff is insulating already against it.

I have had similar thoughts as you have had. Dabo is on top of this mess and it likely will come back to bite some who abuse it.

Generally, totally agree with your post. Only one thing to add. College Football needs to address & regulate Transfer issues, as well as the potential NIL abuses. NCAA needs to step up, or if they disentegrate into non-existence, We need to replace them or push for more Federal gegulation (God, I would hate that).
Thanks for your post!

When Fisher was at FSU, signing top 3 classes every year, he could not make his player work. There was no thought about the team. In the season like now, the time to put in all the preconditioning that determines how good you will be, the Clemson players were knocking themselves out, while their FSU counterparts were counting their stars. Now at TAMU, they will be counting their NIL money. Talent is important, but the players have to buy in, to commit themselves, to work to make themselves the best version of who they can be. Fisher can recruit, but he cannot motivate. Unfortunately, Saban can do both. If we see 'Bama in the CFB, it will be a dog fight. If we see TAMU, Dabo will continue his domination of Fisher.

Neither Texas A&M, nor any school, spends money on hiring athletes via NIL. Please don't forget that NIL is about all athletes, male and female, and only a small number of the thousands and thousands of those athletes will earn any money.

I think they have an informal but important role in targeting it.

When you build your house on a rock, as Dabo has done here

over his tenure, there's comfort when upheaval like NIL and the Portal enters the picture. Football is just too large of an endeavor, too many players and positions that have to work seamlessly together at any given moment, play after play, game after game, to reach that mountaintop. As Dabo has said, "There isn't an elevator to greatness, you have to take the stairs." With football, this is truth.
Where NIL will make the biggest difference and impact, IMO, is basketball. You can buy a Fab Five and sprinkle in a few role players and dominate in that sport like no other. Transfer rules also with paydays in play. With hundreds more programs there in the mix, this is where things could get sideways in a hurry.
Go Tigers.

The NCAA not college football can regulate NIL.

That ship has saiked with the 9-0 SCOTUS ruling.
The only way around it is to professionalize the Power 5 (and maybe the AAC) unionize the players, and have a union contract.
Otherwise, it's going to be the wild west for a looooong time.

The rulings and legislation have only been about an individual's right to earn money and remain eligible for college sports, not the institutions collectively to establish total NIL compensation caps per program, for the program itself to maintain its eligibility to compete for titles within that collective. Similar to roster size limits.
For example, "Earn all the NIL you want, but our allotment is full so you can't do it here." There's 130 FBS schools plus FCS level and beyond. No shortage of opportunities if you're worth all that.
