My Proposal For The Future Of College FB

Jul 21, 2021, 4:02 PM

When they write the obit. for college football, the cause of death will be stated as NIL unless a cure for it is found. I submit the following as the cure:

The top 26 teams withdraw from the NCAA and their respective conferences. Form a new Association known as The American College Football Association (ACFA).

Form two 13 team conferences, East and West.

Each team plays every team in their conference (12 regular season games).

At end of season the top four teams in each conference play for the Division Championship.

Team ranked number 1 plays team ranked number 4. Team ranked number 3 plays team ranked number 2.

winners of semi conference championship play each other for conference championship.

The conference champions play each other for National Championship.

Total number of games played is 15.

Now here is the kicker. The new association will be set up like the NFL. The top rated High School players will be asked if they want to play college FB. If yes, they will be rated by position and will be on a list given to all 26 teams. The HS players will then be drafted by the 26 teams same as in the NFL. The player drafted will have to play for the team who drafted him. The player cannot play for any other team in the ACFA. If the player does not want to play for the team who drafted him, he can play for any other college team NOT in the ACFA. If the player later wants to transfer, he will not be allowed to play for any ACFA team. He can transfer to a ACFA school, but will not be playing FB. The ACFA and no team in the ACFA will help any player in any way to be compensated for NIL.

Details will be worked out. But the bottom line to survival for college FB is to level the playing field for the top 26 teams with regards to NIL. If allowed to proceed on present course, it will become a bidding war for the top players and the highest bidders will dominate the sport. Drafting players is the only way for college FB to survive. It works for the NFL. The NCAA has outlived its sell by date.

The whole idea can be tweaked to make it work.

Another option...

for those wanting to expand the playoff format might be set-up a fifty-two team league with four Divisions. Each team plays every team in their Division (12 regular season games). The Division winners and the runners-up make-up an 8-team playoff to decide the national champion.

Even then, it still going to be Clemson, Bama, OU and Ohio State in the final four most years.

Don't call it "College" Football Association, call it Mercenaries. Have the conferences stratified by total value of NIL deals: $50MM plus, $40 - $50MM, $30-$40MM, you get the drift. Each team that wins their conference has to move to the next conference up for 3 years, then be eligible to come back based on their NIL value. The top $NIL winner has to play in the NFL for 3 years. Might be interesting. Oh and don't call them recruits anymore, call them new hires.

I like Dabo’s idea of holding 80% of the money until they graduate & tie bonuses to their behavior & grades.

Interesting. After hearing the OU/TX story today, I had a similar thought.

What if the SEC decided to expand to 20 or 24 or 30 or whatever teams and just break away from the NCAA completely?

What if the OU/TX story is just the trial balloon that is being floated?

Now I know you probably put a lot of thought into this, but whose to say which are the top 26 teams and then there is Notre Dame, which ain't going to join no freaking conference no way no how and will go to the end of the earth to see they are the 27th team and that they play by there own set of rules.
Don't think they don't have the clout to do it. They all ready have.
Add to that what happens if a 5 star recruit doesn't want to play for the team that drafts him.
I think you might need to reconsider that these student athletes are not getting paid to play. They are getting paid for the autographs, pictures, signing replica jerseys and helmets( signing actual team merchandise would be considered copy right infringement if I am correct).
But there will be no bidding war because there will be no draft. Players will continue to be recruited by the program and there will be limited NCAA scholarships and NCAA mandated number of players currently on any team.
Oh ,one last thing. The NCAA ain't going anywhere either.
