Spud and cornbread

Spud-- I do not post often but read posts from time to time. I read your post about taking soup and cornbread to your neighbors. What a neighborly and generous deed. I'm sure your neighbors are very grateful. I'm in my 80's but still doing my cooking. For years I've been doing a cornbread called CHARLIE cornbread from a recipe I received years ago. It is by far the best I've ever had. The only difficult part is that it must be cooked in a cast iron skillet. If you or anyone else reading this decides to try this please be my guest.
I'm not very good with computers but will try to attach the recipe.

HATRED of cornbread. I never liked it either, but I asked him one time why he hated it so much. He told me that his family was so poor, like many others during the Depression, that cornbread was literally all they had to eat for long stretches. He vowed that if he ever attained any kind of economic well being, that he would NEVER eat cornbread again.
We like to think that with all the Checks and Balances in the Banking System, Stock Market, etc, that a major Depression could never happen again in this country. I am not convinced of that. All it takes is the right set of calamatous events, one on top of the other, and panic will once again ensue. Hope I never live to see it, if it DOES happen.

Sweet potatoes was another food that was eaten often during the Depression. Some of our elders dislike them today.

Never tried on a grill. 400 degree oven is critical. Many who don't like cornbread love this one. It has real cream corn and sour cream. I'm having today with a bowl on homemade chili.

One of my grandmothers was the same way, hers was black eyed peas though. She vowed to never touch them again and to my knowledge never did till the day she died.

My Dad was the same way about jeans or dungarees as he called them. Born in 1930, he and other poor kids wore them all the time. As a child I never saw him wear them except when doing manual labor.
