My biggest concern with the Transfer Portal

Nov 9, 2021, 6:16 PM

is the O Line.

If you ranked our position groups the 10 years, I think everyone would say O line has been the weakest. I wouldn't say it's been terrible, but, I think we can all agree it's the area the most improvement could be made.

That said, my concern about the transfer portal is actually very minor, except for one area: O line.

We have already shown that area is a weakness. Now, if we start losing guys to the transfer portal, it's going to highlight,...er Compound our weaknesses.

If there is any area we need guys to stay for a 4th and 5th year, it's the Off Line. Further, if there is ANY area we should increase our number (and not just sit on 2-3 empties each year) then it should be Off line.

Losing a Redshirt Soph, or Junior and replacing them next year with a Freshman is only going to further compound our issues.

If we get into a constant state of playing Freshman and Sophomore on the Offensive line, then it's going to be ugly. We shown we're not competitive in that spot, in most years, until we have mostly Jr & Seniors in that position group.

Dabo says our Number is 15, but I sure would like to see that go to 16-17 given this is the area that needs to most influx of talent. This is the area that we need to have guys in the program for 3-4 years. This is the area we need to an extra guy or two in the case of transfers.

The olinemen better really love their position coach where they build a strong bond to stay around.

Even though I never thought he was great, I think our line took a big unexpected loss after last season when Carman went pro. It was too late to get a quality recruit and then add in all the injuries this year, it has not been good. In the past recruiting years, we have signed 15 O linemen.

I think that's a great point. I was surprised Carman left

And I'm sure it put our Staff in a bit of a compromised position as it was too late to go find a good fit.

Add in 2 career ending injuries and now our 2nd transfer over the past 3 years, and its easy to see how we got here.

And guess what, I'm okay that. What I'm not okay is a contention plan so we don't get here again.

Add 1-2 players to the number will not upset the apple cart.....especially when it's an area that's always been perceived as the weakest.

recruit more than 15 or continue to have it be a problem. Guys get hurt and quit. Maybe quit having so many wr or keep the coach kids scholarships back for recruits. I think those families can manage tuition if our numbers are a problem

I think the number is not as important as the quality. Recruiting 2 more guys to ride the pines isn't going to help, as they will hit the portal if they aren't as good or can't get playing time. We just need to hit on the ones we recruit. OL is the hardest position to evaluate due to having to develop their bodies and it's a tough position mentally. And there aren't that many top notch OL for all the teams that want them.

I would be terribly disappointed if that was the approach.

I certainly never insisted we should just pick up 2 guys to ride the pine.

Hitting on O lineman is tough, and the only way we're going to have more quality players is continue to go after the best lineman, refine the way we identify and develop, and increase the scholarships at that position.

I agree with much of what you say, @majicMan.

15 is a bit too small for the O-Line numbers.

Clemson has been pretty smart about some O-Line recruiting, however. With some regularity, we have signed 3* O-Linemen and 3* D-Linemen whose expectations for starting immediately have probably been more realistic than the (all too often) over-hyped and over-blown self-esteem for the 4*s and 5*s.

(Of course, some of our signing of 3* players may be simply because we cannot successfully recruit only 4* and 5* lineman and still reach out [too small overall] number of 15 O-Linemen.)

But the success of 3* O-Linemen such as J.McFadden, T.Anchrum (now in the NFL) and T.Shatley (been in NFL since 2014) is inarguable. Remember 3* D-lineman Gage Cervenka, who got moved to OG and was a true college stud O-lineman.

SUMMARY: Signing maybe ~ 2 additional O-Linemen to get to overall roster count of 17 O-Linemen ... using 3*'s to round out the numbers ... may be worth consideration.

Have no problem recruiting more than 15. But just recruit guys who we think can play and not to a number. Almost all the portal guys are there from lack of PT. So if they can’t play, what’s the point of just increasing the number?
