He’s about to get smarter than you and will certainly let you know that. And then at about 22 he will figure out that you were actually a lot smarter than he thought.

Probably around 35-40 before most realize dad wasn't so dumb, after all!

I’m 61 and may my parents rest in peace. But still, to this day, they keep getting smarter than I thought they ever were every day.

I can't say that I was blessed with children unfortunately but I have 3 neices, couple really close friends that their kids have grown up knowing me as uncle and as college students have confided in me with their troubles asking for guidance. Often get asked how to approach their parents about their current struggles or anxieties in daily life or school.
All of this to say, from my experience from a different perspective is that kids today are definitely more worldly than they used to be at the same age. But yet I find that they are also very naive about responsibility, money and future plans. There is this generation where kids as myself were not given anything without going out working like mowing yard, washing cars, cutting firewood, etc., etc., and excuses like football practice or sports practice didnt matter. You had to find time to meet your obligations if you wanted to go to fair, get new shoes, or new bicycle. Your parents expected something in return as they were never given anything.
Then somewhere along my Generation, parents started giving kids things when asked and this immediate gratification became the standard with no obligation to do chores or repay. Used to be birthdays and Christmas were only time you got gifts without working for them. Now look at this world of kids with zero commitment to teams and lets look for the biggest NIL deal instead of what is best for my future. The immediate satisfaction world is what drives kids nowadays and all too often considerations are not about future education and opportunities.
Nothing changes without NCAA or schools get together and force change. The schools without huge NIL collective will far outnumber those schools with unlimited NIL.

You are correct. You are off on your timeline.
I am 77. My parents built this place, went to war to save this place, and then spoiled me. Every generation since them is less.

My parents were young military couple and I was treated with love and respect, but I was also expected to toe the line and work for what I wanted. After I graduated college, my parents were still fairly young and had the empty nest syndrome so they adopted a 2yr old, she is actually like my 3rd cousin, but my parents wanted to keep her in the family and not go to a strange family. The hardnosed parents I had became afflicted with spoiling her and giving her a lot of what she asked for. They became the same as current society giving to her continuously and now today even as a young married women in late 20s, she doesnt baulk at asking my parents for a new phone or laptop. I would never dream of picking up the phone and asking my dad for a new phone and he would probably ask what's wrong with me, haha! But it's that generation where immediate satisfaction is expected.

You post --
"We went with Skeeta to the Wake game last year and met BbO and his daughter there.
It was a lot of fun and look forward to seeing Skeeta again soon."
More confusion! This implies BBO ~~~~ I know his daughter is exceptional, don't judge her as to him.

As long as he has role models like the tailgate group mentioned he'll learn from their wisdom, he'll make his mistakes, don't we all. But we tend to migrate back to our roots. His foundation is rock solid. Dysfunctional as a family can be, they're still family.
Priority number one- rock solid foundation and relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Teach him that Jesus gets US.
Happy Birthday and Happy New Year

Happy birthday Mfojr!!! You have a proud daddy there. My son also had a birthday today. He turned 22. He was born the morning we got so much snow in 2002. He is senior at Clemson, and he's so much smarter than I ever was. He will graduate Summa ### Loude in economics. Being a good supportive dad is the most rewarding thing you can ever do. Enjoy that boy... he'll be 22 before you know it.
