that the source of this malignancy in the program is the head coach. His decisions, and no one else’s, have put us in this position. Even if we finish with a losing season and absolutely crater, I seriously doubt he’ll make the extensive changes that will need to be made. I mean, he has to essentially change his ethos on coaching and make systemic changes from top to bottom. Even if he makes changes, his track record in hiring top talent has been miserable for quite awhile. And let’s face it, the desperately hungry guy from 2015 is long gone. He’s a country club guy with sporadic prideful temper tantrums.

He has the same players this year as last year, with the significant losses being RJ Mickens (S) and Barrett Carter (LB). As for speed, Ricardo Jones is faster than RJ Mickens; Ricardo Jones also has a year of experience (albeit as a backup) before Tom Allen arrived.

Tom Allen is FOS to blame this year’s unmistakenly worse defensive performance (compared against 2024) on the players. The elephant in the room is our DC.

Tom Allen is a one year disaster. If Dabo had fired him after supper last night, then that wouldn’t have been fast enough.

You cannot replace experience. Mickens played a ton of football. How do we know if Jones is faster exactly? Mickens looked pretty fast on that int return versus Texas. This new defense is aggressive and puts the defenders in one on one coverage. Allen needs to numb down the aggression and implement zone coverage and zone blitzes if he wants pressure. Saturday the best bet was to play back and make Duke have long drives giving up the short stuff. The secondary is a disgrace right now.

Seems to me in this NIL+Portal format of college football, you need to have a GM+Head Coach structure.

Someone has to focus on the business, while someone else focused on the field.

When the business was smaller, the AD was the GM.

Half of our coaching staff is getting its first coaching gigs in college at Clemson. That is not how you build a program. They need to go cut their teeth somewhere else without Daddy Dabo to watch over them, then they can come back and coach here. Ala Eason.

I’m not even gonna go through the support staff list. It’s embarrassing. Like 2-3 of the 21 have any coaching experience at all.

Conn has coached safeties thru the natty years. Coaching hasn’t changed. Teeth are cut.

Eason is experienced and Eason and Dabo never knew each other before hiring him away from Auburn. Teeth are cut, and this isn’t a “friends and family” hire anyway.

Reed coaches the secondary and has been here thru the natty years. McDaniel is not the reason for DBs losing receivers. Coaching hasn’t changed. Teeth are cut.

We will not field a formidable team for many seasons simply because we can’t afford to forcibly part ways with Dabo and he’s not stepping down. Why would he? We had a good run with Dabo. The ACC is too good for that now the offenses are too good and ours has not gained any ground but most of all he failed to acquire great defensive minds When he let butterball go from last year. That was all we had left. Everyone else had already gone to Oklahoma, and he didn’t replace them with top-notch defensive minds any top-notch defensive coordinator. I think one of his recruiting pitches may be hey if you don’t make it in the pros, I’ll hire you and make you a millionaire. And that is what has killed Clemson.

I love about Dabo are the things that are now hampering the program. His philosophy of developing/discipling (players not unproven coaches) should be a perfect fit for the DNA of CFB. 18-20 year olds need it. I hate that is being pushed aside haphazardly by the NCAA.

With that said, if we want to win, that can’t be the main philosophy as OP said. Dabo may not want it because it just isn’t right in principle. If that’s the case, retire. We all know what he’s done, nothing to prove to me anyway.

“ And let’s face it, the desperately hungry guy from 2015 is long gone. He’s a country club guy with sporadic prideful temper tantrums.”

I think there are three key problems for Dabo:

1. The NIL, revshare, transfer portal era does not suit his style, and he doesn’t like it. I get it. Most coaches don’t like it. However, he has never had a problem taking full advantage of the riches of modern college football to sign huge contracts. Bringing in 100 handpicked guys and helping them graduate and become better people is not an $11,500,000 million dollar job. The greed of coaches, including Dabo, contributed to the current model of college football. Either deal with the new landscape or give up the eight figure salary and go to the beach or back to commercial real estate.

2. Dabo has made some good hires and signed some good QB prospects in recent years- on paper. Allen and Riley had comparable credentials to Morris and Venables. DJU and Klubnik were five stars like Watson and Lawrence. Goodwin was a promotion from beneath a successful coordinator like Elliot. However, the results are vastly different. It’s like hitting eagles and birdies on the front nine and a bunch of bogeys on the back nine.

3. Dabo is not the same “mistakes full speed” or “D+ hire” guy as his first press conference as the interim. He was hungry and humble then with a lot to prove. Since the high points, though, he has become entitled and egotistical. He’s not as likeable as he was before the success, and the “All we have done is win” stuff makes it harder to want to defend him in tough times.

Not hiring Top Staff? Riley was a Top 3 OC hire based on many people's list. Tom Allen was Top 5 and many had him as Top 2 with Jim Knowles being #1, who went to Penn St from Ohio. Have you seen PSU's record this year? I think its the same as Clemson's. By the way, PSU was preseason top 5 just like Clemson.

Dabo has hired Steele, Venables, Morris, Riley, Allen which are all top hires. He made mistakes with Streeter and WG but he quickly moved on from them.

We will see if Dabo is all-in at Clemson by year's end as he will have to make big changes again. If he went to another school he would have to hire a complete staff so if he would have to do it there, he might as well do it at Clemson and see of he can fix the problems

The other dynamic here is the administration. They seem to have had enough, and Dabo has lost the credibility that allowed him complete control. The coaching hires and philosophical approach are no longer gonna be at his whim, because his whim has degraded what was once a great program. So, either he adapts and we improve, or he is shown the door. Idk how long the leash is, but it’s much shorter.

Yeah, losing Home games to bad teams because your team is unprepared and uninspired won’t keep any coach around for long

Hmm…so all of you act like it’s Coach Swinney’s fault for making his salary. He is underpaid for all he has done for Clemson. Where were we before he got here?!!! 30 years removed from an unlikely national championship at the hands of Tom Osborne and the most dominant program in college football. You need to appreciate all the success we’ve achieved (at the hands of Nick Almighty )and realize that it doesn’t happen every year. We have vastly underperformed this year, and there are plenty of people to blame, but your constant whining and finger pointing are unbecoming of true Clemson Tigers. I’m especially amazed at how many of you posters have made every correct decision in your professional careers and would not surround yourself with people who have been vital in your success along the way. I guess loyalty means nothing in today’s world of win, win, win. Lombardi was wrong…winning is not the only thing. Relationships, loyalty, and perseverance are the only things. Good luck finding someone who can do more for this university than Dabo Swinney.

"...he has to essentially change his ethos on coaching" - true. And also on

recruiting - neither of which is going to happen. That's not who he is. The things that made him great pre-NIL and pre-portal work against him now. He can't change who he is and remain genuine.

I suspect he'll step down next year.

I am just as upset with the results of this season as anyone. But people have got to calm down. When the team and Dabo made the right choices they were fantastic and lasted. Chad Morris was a great hire. Keeping Scott and Elliot to take over worked. Elliot alone got stale. Venables was great and stayed for a decade. Those were pretty good decisions. This year vis combination of personnel, execution, and coaching. i have faith in Dabo Swinney. All of us could never have seen that s happening before the season. Dabo will make the changes needed with players and coaches. He is not going to go out like this. He will go out a winner. So suck it up. We have won a lot of games the last decade and a half, this year is a bust. It happens. It hurts, but it will get better. This year is what it was like EVERY year for the majority of the 90s!
