A reality check on the 4th for this Football season

Jul 4, 2012, 9:42 AM

Look, we all like to rewrite history but before the 2011 season MOST on this board were saying "2012 is the year", I was a voice in the wilderness who thought 2011 stacked up better than 2012 for us, my main reason was depth and experience on both lines. I saw the problem for 2012 (losing so many seniors on both lines) but most fans were looking at skill positions only.

Now here we are again, before the 2012 season most are saying "2013 is the year" (its become an annual thing, saying the NEXT year is "the year"). Only this time it is correct, 2013 does stack up extremely well for us with the two biggest hits we take being Ellington and Freeman. But all in all, the total picture looks good.

Here is the reality check. Everyone is getting more and more hyped for 2012 as the season approaches. We lost 4 of our last 6 games folks, do we need reminders on some of those scores? NC St? 70 to WV? And on top of this we will field two lines that simply will not be ready (although the FUTURE looks good), we lost our backup and big play potential RB, and our star offensive player is facing some form of punishment.

I am EXTREMELY concerned about our ability to stop the run and run the ball this season. I am also concerned about pass rush and our OTs being able to stop the pass rush. I'm calling for 7-5 right now with a ACC title repeat in 2013.

As I said at this time last year, this is my favorite time of the year, because everyone is undefeated and filled with hope. Personally I believe we will be better than 7-5, but I do think we may have trouble early. Auburn will be a real test and a win here will be a huge boost to this young team. I will stay positive and believe in this team until they show me otherwise. I really think this coaching staff will be the litmus paper for this team in 2012. Dabo, in my opinion, has finally found the combination I think he has been looking for.

I agree completely.***

One of those 7 wins had better be against USuC.

I can't totally agree with you. Granted we are short on experience in the offensive line, a position of greatest importance, but we will improve as the season goes on. Something that we did not do last year. Only the Auburn game concerns me but FSU will be no easy game.
There has been no shortage of talent at Clemson for several years now. IF, a new attitude and desire can be established with this team early, the Tigers will be strong. Lets not forget that we have new coaches who bring a different game to Clemson. I am sure that the coaches are anxious to make up for that terrible night in Miami. I suspect that they and the players have been waiting for the next game for a long time. The best way to forget the ugly taste of the West Virginia game is a super performance in Atlanta. I hope that that will happen. Leaders must be developed between now and Labor Day. That is my concern.

Oh no!!! A post like this might get u on the coot list

Jul 4, 2012, 10:55 AM

;)

I'm thinking 9-3 for your Tigers but I agree that skill position talent usually cannot overcome poor line play.

i'm not giving usuc a win over vandy on a thursday night to open the season. usuc's calling card was their defense, and they lost some big players and their dc from that side of the ball. usuc's not scaring anyone with their offense.

Re: Coots going 8-4 this year?

Jul 5, 2012, 3:03 AM [ in reply to Coots going 8-4 this year? ]

No...

UGA No... Couldn't beat us last year in their house with Garcia giving them the ball. This year, at our place, with a steady hand on the wheel should be an easier row to hoe. And we have this running back who just loves putting up yards on the doggies. Great D they have though. Should be a low scoring game as both offenses could struggle.

LSU Probably... LSU is good. #### good. And they return a lot of talent from last years #### good team. It's also in Baton Rouge, and will probably be at night, neither of which is ever a comforting thing. Can we win though? Absolutely. Anything can happen, ask Alabama.

Arkansas Tough one... A lot of people say that Arkansas has had our number lately, beating us handily. I think Patrino had our number. He just knew how to keep Ellis Johnson off his game. Not having Patrino/Johnson should make this a fresh series, so it could go either way. They have a really good QB and a good RB (if injury prone). They did lose a lot of talented receivers though. Being in Columbia should be the difference and I think we win this one.

Clemson... No, hell no... You guys have a good QB, great Receivers and a very good running back. Skill wise you are set on offense. Your OL, however, is going to lose you games. Defensively, no clue. Venables could come in and be everything you are hoping. He could mold the talent you have into what they should be. He could scheme and coach his ### off. The thing with Venables is you have to wonder, was it his defense or Stoops'? If it was his, why was he so easily demoted when Mike Stoops came back to Norman? It would be kind of poetic if he does become the defensive genius you guys want to believe he will be. His coming in to fix a defense that gave up 70 points in a bowl game would nicely mirror Bob Stoops rise to the same position at Florida after Spurrier's previous coordinator gave up 62 to Nebraska. We'll see (again anything can happen :)

Ideally (delusionally?) 12-0 to 10-2 (LSU and the one we historically fart away, could be Vandy), realistically 10-2 to 9-3. Though... I do have this fervent belief that if there was ever a perfect time for us to go undefeated and win the SEC championship game at USC... the end of the world is scheduled for two weeks later.

Reality check?

Jul 4, 2012, 11:02 AM

Please. Reality? Come on man? Look at who our O coach is--Chad Morris--who took young men each year--even with graduation--and turned those young men into a team that won championships at the highest level in Texas--going to give up? Hell no. Do you think he has let up coaching and working for our team to be the very best? Our boys will be ready and hungry.

There there is our D. Do you think Brent Venables is not out to prove something with our guys?

This team is going to be good. It is going to BUILD on what it did last year. Setbacks only make you work harder to get more wins. That is the reality.

GO TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hear everything you're saying, but I think we fare better than 7-5. I'm thinking 10-2 with possible losses to FSU and either VT or usuc. Thankfully, we have some of our hardest opponents at HOME. Even NCSU may surprise some folks this year, but we have them in DV, so I'm okay on that one. I don't see Auburn beating us either. They lost a ton of talent and coaching. Their program is rebuilding, but we catch them so early that we'll probably be okay. We just have to not turn the ball over too often and we'll be fine.

I can't find 5 losses on our schedule. Just can't do it.

Realistically I hink we win 7, maybe 8 mostly because of OL deficiencies. It won't hurt us against average and bad teams but it will be the difference against the good teams.

Everyone keeps talking about the losses on the OL. Well, last year's OL sucked. Bad. It can't be any worse this year.

I'll take my chances with the new blood.

My thoughts exactly. Replacing an online that wasn't able

Jul 4, 2012, 5:14 PM

To establish the run is not a loss. It is all attitude and would have concerned me more if we had that same unit. I think Morris makes that a happen this yr

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

ou may be right.

Jul 4, 2012, 4:16 PM

After assuming a Furman victory, I flipped my lucky penny and came up with 7-5 too.

Jul 4, 2012, 5:29 PM

about accurately estimating the potential record of the team you track the most closely.

Wait...no it's not. It's about having fun and supporting the team. As almost always, we are coming into a season where our team can win every game it plays, so every week that we play I will hope for 1-0.

Some of you guys really think we are a bunch of 9 year olds who need to understand that we might not get the BB gun for Christmas. I can hope for 12-0 and handle a 7-5 season.

If we go 7-5, I look forward to your "I told you so" post, because again, that is what it's all about.

Re: More than seven wins

Jul 4, 2012, 5:42 PM

Determining the personally of a team cannot be done before the season. I was shocked by how well the Tigers performed last season but the addition of Sammy and Tajh made a drastic deference. The offensive line was not good last year and the defense only played well against Virginia Tech. The rest of the season the offense had to score a boat load of points to win. In my opinion most of our defensive problems were due to style and I believe that Steele depended too much on thinking rather than reacting. If the defense is better and can keep us in games early while our O-line learns to play together I think we can be better than last year. I cannot make a prediction on the number of games that we will win but I think it will be more than seven. Our linebackers should be better because they are all a year older, we lost some key players on the D-line but we also had some good backups who played a good bit. We lost a lot of our O-line but I don't think the ones we lost were that good. Having a good center usually helps the rest of the line and ours is picked on some of the preseason All American teams. Our offense covered up a lot of the weakness in our O-line and with just a little improvement we good do much better with some help from the defense. Hopefully they will have matured enough to beat the Gamecocks, don't think I could stand another year listening to those jerks.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We're going 11-1.

Jul 4, 2012, 5:58 PM

We have recruited too well, compared to our opponents, to not win 10 games. The Venables hire will push us up to 11-1.
