Monte Lee end of year wrap
Jun 9, 2021, 2:47 PM
|
|
We just got word that we will have our end-of-year wrap with baseball coach Monte Lee on June 21.
Now, for those who are wondering if we will hear any news of changes in the coaching staff, I am hearing that the staff will remain in place for next season. We will of course have the chance to ask Monte about that when we talk. Why no staff changes? My guess is that Lee understands he has to win next year. At what level? Reach a regional? Host? Make a Super Regional? I am not sure what DRad has set as goals. But a lot of people out there understand that Lee could be in for a one-year deal, and it's hard to attract someone who is REALLY good when you might have a lame-duck situation. That is my guess (based off of a conversation with someone who would know what this is like).

No changes means the same results. Unable to hit, field, run the bases, pitch or advance runners. Could be an even longer year. I'm all for giving Lee another year but if nothing changes, what do you expect ? I understand not being able to get a decent asst. coach when you have a lame duck head coach but at least one can address how things will be changed in order to improve. No changes, more of the same.

Why would any coach any where leave their current job to only get fired a year later at their new one?
Monte has tied his own hands here.

Even worse, DRad specifically fired Jack for refusing to make changes going into a lame duck season. Now the exact scenario plays out with Lee and he gets the benefit of that argument. Any pretense that DRad cares one iota about Clemson baseball should be eradicated at this point. If you are a supporter of Clemson baseball the man at the top couldn’t give a sh*t less about you.

Went to the UVA game yesterday. I'd forgotten what it was like to watch a team make a Super Regional. Probably will go this weekend. I'm old and it may be the last chance to go see one. Obviously the chances to see my beloved TIGERS returning are slim to none, sadly.
I've let Dan Radakovich and the AD department know what my opinion on it is. Listen to each year end wrap from Monte for his tenure. He'll rinse and repeat this one too. It'll be a bunch of puff and fluff.
Meanwhile, I'll enjoy our ladies at Mcwhorter. Much better chance of making a Super and CWS with Rittman.

No staff changes. No one (including Monte or Drad) coming out and stating specifics on what’s going to be done to turn things around, give fans and also players an idea of who’s leading and how they want this program to be successful again. Hitting? Pitching? Just crickets. On June 21, Monte Lee will just regurgitate the same answers and excuses he’s been using for the past 2-3 seasons. Ironic how we have to sit back and watch a former gamecock drive Clemson Baseball into the ground.

Thanks for posting it. Had not seen this. My daddy always told me. Talks cheap, takes money to buy whiskey. I know, before I get a barrage, we don't have unlimited funds. But it does send a message. But if we take our orange tinted glasses off, we've tried to cheap out on all our "other" sports. We've been fortunate to get coaches like Wilhelm. Penley, Ibriham, Krease ( sp) and even Leggett. We paid all of them peanuts compared to what we've received,
Speaking of messages. Kingston had a media wrap and the media wasn't like it is around here. He didn't get tossed softie questions. He was asked directly why his top 100 talent wasn't producing. Why were they striking out so much. Why can't we(usc) get pitchers that can hold a lead... Do you need to change staff and if not what are you going to do different so next year doesn't result in another failed regional.
One response stood out. He said we're going to change our hitting approach. Instead of playing long ball analytics, we're going to a hitting approach of just putting the ball in play.

Obviously, we couldn't afford to pay something like this, but what about Coach Bakich at meechigan. Clemson ties and salary in top 10 @ 425,000 yearly. That's not unreasonable. However, that said, look at the top 10 paid coaches and you'll see names not listed like LSU coach, sully at Florida etc that are not there, yet they have successful programs. Coaching matters.

Judge, I love you brother, but don't you want the best for all Clemson sports. Should our goal be a national championship in every sport?
Obtainable? Yes. Realistic, not every year, not every 10 years. But at least competitive with a chance.
First goal for our AD is to serve the student athletes with the best chance to succeed in life. DRad has done a good job in that.
People say Dabo can do it because of unlimited funds. That may be true. But then look at Coach Penley, had to raise his own funds but he's obtained DRads number 1 goal and gave us a chance at a natty - consistency.
Noonan - not unlimited funds, not highest paid coach, kids have unbelievable APR.
Softball - tbd, but off to a wonderful start and according to other poster, he's got great talent coming in next year.
Men's tennis - having to rebuild from a decimated program but off to a great start bringing in the number 2 rated class followed by a number 18 class. 18 only because of class size.
Women's bball - seems to be On the upswing.
@T_I_P (doubt he'll get this mention) but he listed a very realistic ranking of ALL Clemson sports for the past year, along with comments and suggestions what needed to happen to get better and program direction. Unfortunately, the post didn't get much traction.
I'd love to have a civil, realistic discussion on all sports and see replies. We have brilliant people in the know here on tnet but when someone tries to say something, they get hijacked as a hater, a coot, an uncaring fan and the threads turn into a chit show with ppl pointing fingers. No one wants to be a part of that.
You yourself has done excellent analysis along with nctigs on bball. But then you throw shade or barbs on anyone that disagreed with ur opinion. But at some point, coaching matters.

I don't see women's basketball on the upswing. Amanda Butler is going to have to recruiting a lot better. She signed 1 top 100 player for 2021. Staley signed 3 of the top 5. North Carolina signed 4 of the top 20.
She has been here 3 years with 2 losing seasons. 40-50 overall and 18-34 in the ACC doesn't cut it.
Players that could have come back transferred out so the 2022 roster has 6 returning players and 7 new players. There is something wrong there.
The program was run into the ground with some horrendous hires while the AD was indifferent.

First, thanks for replying. Where do you all find this information on recruiting for women's bball and the transfers too. I should have quantified that with on the upswing from where it's been.
She's got her work cutout on the recruiting trail. We're miles behind scar and the sec. Middle ACC. And no, that's not acceptable. If she doesn't start bringing in top recruits or transfers, then maybe she wasn't the best hire.

espn has their ranking of the top 100 players:
http://www.espn.com/high-school/girls-basketball/recruiting/rankings/_/class/2021Get the inside scoop on the top ranked high school girls' basketball players. In-depth player briefings, film and more on ESPNHS.com.
Clemsontigers.com has an updated roster. Lots of players entered the transfter portal; a couple of players had their profiles removed during the season.
Half the team left. The same thing happened with the volleyball program.

I wasn’t giving my opinion on baseball or Coach Lee.
Jun 10, 2021, 11:42 AM
[ in reply to Re: Hardcore Tiger baseball fans be like ] |

I was simply using a gif to impart some humor because I know a lot of the big baseball fans here are upset.
To answer your question, of course I want to see all of our teams succeed. Baseball has a great history and can be better than it has been recently. Whether that is Monte’s fault, whole or in part, is up for debate.
I think Monte is a good coach. He seems like a good guy. He needs to win more. But freaking out about one losing season and calling for his head is a bit over the top IMO. Likewise, saying that Radakovich doesn’t care about baseball just because he doesn’t fire everyone who has a disappointing season isn’t fair either.
I think Monte should get next year, with clear expectations in mind. If he doesn’t meet them, then we should probably go in another direction. Similar to how most of us felt about Brownell going into last season.
Lastly, I don’t really care if people disagree with me. They can have whatever opinion they want. I just don’t have much patience with opinions not grounded in facts or reality.

Yeah, I know the GIF was all in fun. But I have to disagree, it's not just one season. Or at least not for me. 3 years ago when we got run over by vandy, Monte said post season review that it was pitching. We haven't improved on pitching. Each year in post season review, he's said we have to improve on (pick whatever problem happened in that year) but then doesn't improve on that issue and the issue or excuse used the previous year doesn't get resolved either.
So to me and at least a few others that wanted DRad to move on after this year is because it sank real low this year. The ACC was down this year. And a lot because they're young teams... Yes, deroberts disagreed with me but teams younger than us. It was a down year and we should not have been close to a losing season.
Kinda what 85 alluded to above about women's bball. There's something wrong there. Don't know about women's bball but monte's baseball philosophy doesn't agree with me, especially hitting strategies and basics, fielding and base running etc.
But what I base my opinion on for replacing Monte, is he hasn't shown he can recruit. Coot Kingston may be a horrible coach but the reason they brought him in was to recruit. Holbrook was only matching Monte in recruiting and Tanner fired him because of that. Monte appears to have leveled off in the 20-30 rated campus classes. Which equates to mid to upper 3rd ACC. Ok, so I ask you, has he even met those expectations? 11th seed says no.
When we let Jack go because he was failing, we should have brought someone in like Texas a & m just did. Someone that was a proven winner at a p5 program in a tough conference.., but DRad didn't, he went cheap imo. He got a mid major coach that happened to take a mid major team to a regional but nothing more. That's what we have 6 years later. We'll make regionals but chances to make super are slim, almost nill to make Omaha. Takes money to buy whiskey.

Do you know where he ranks among ACC coaches and nationally in terms of salary? If so, I’d love to know. I’ve read here that he makes significantly less than what some other programs pay their baseball coaches, but I’ve never seen where he actually ranks.

He also forgot about Beer and where some of are other players ranked coming out of high school. 2 Top 10 recruiting classes in a row. Some will get drafted straight out of high school and the late draft does hurt. Still, Monte recruited well and a lot if arms in the past couple of years.
As for Vandy, they had had injuries and got healthy both those two Vandy teams were good. Corbin had won a national championship and has more resources at Vandy. Tanner knew exactly what he was doing to Clemson in the selection of Vandy that second time, for sure, just like OK St in the year before.

We did improve in pitching after that, just 2020 got cut short and Strider and others got drafted. 2020 was going to be a good year for our program. The young pitchers are good, just have takes time and we need hitting to help them out. The issue that I have had in the past has been our depending almost exclusively on the long ball and not contact hitting. Is why I preferred to see Davidson up over Beer when we needed a rally. Sure a homerun is nice but when a team needs multiple runs they need to get guys on base more than clear bases - 1 and 3 solo, strikeout, flyout is not the answer needed at that point. Hitting has been an issue since Davidson has been gone and really was beforehand, imo.

As I have previously mentioned on this board, the problem is no longer Monte, the problem is DRad. It’s time we start holding him accountable. His golden parachute is Dabo and the success of the football team. Because of that success he feels comfortable in his position and avoids dealing with difficult situations in all other sports. IMO it’s time to give him some goals that meet the expectations of the Clemson faithful or he’s gone.

I think the key part of Hawkeye's statement was the "successes of the football team." Our greatest successes have come under DRad even though I think that most would give him little if no credit. He falls into the same category as Lee and Brownell. They have not performed poorly for the most part. However, they really have not done well either.

same way over and over again, but expecting different results. I don't expect different results next year from the same staff.
Unless they have been told in no uncertain terms what it will take to keep their jobs, and that those terms require much better performance than in previous years. But, in these Snowflake times I can't believe DRad would do that, it would hurt someone's feelings.

We don’t develop players. Clemson really isn’t family. What I mean is in athletics and the university hires a lot of people outside of the Clemson family. There isn’t love for former players and students as much as people think. Trust me I have ties and resources.

The culture of the players aren’t happy either. Many transfers right now. Yes I know we get transfers all the time and even more right now but like I mentioned I have resources and from baseball standpoint players aren’t happy. If attended games this year you can easily tell the body language and energy in the dugout and field during games.

Thank you for the update. I look forward to hearing what Coach Lee has to say.
I wish I could say I’m not disappointed.
