Just got back from South Bend, my impression of the game, fans and stadium…

Their fans: First of all they were very nice and overall a classy bunch. I came up there expecting a wine and cheese crowd and there were a few of those but overwhelmingly their average fan looked like a bunch of fat rednecks like me. Their students did not seem to match much of the rest of their fan base as they all struck me as a bunch of woke white liberals as opposed to a more centric older fanbase, which to be fair is happening at every college. The strange part to me is that all seemed to embrace America the Beautiful and the national anthem as they should. I liked that the announcer recited the Preamble to the Constitution while the band played America the beautiful. Once the game started their ads, events and professors honored, etc reflected a more woke messaging.
The stadium, the campus: Everything was beautiful. All brick. It all had an old fashioned 1940’s feel to it but still very nice. I had to go and see it once to see what the fuss was all about but now that I have I have a greater appreciation for Death Valley and our Gameday experience. Especially at night in the Valley.
The game: Before the game started I overheard many of their fans talking. They were not the least bit optimistic that they had any chance. Even after kickoff they were kind of tepid. All that changed after the blocked punt. That lit up their stadium and it was as though they “woke up the echos” as they say and it became a difficult road environment with a great advantage to them. The strangest part to me was the wind. I’ve played and coached in the wind before and generally it is consistently in one direction. I watched the little flags in the goal posts and they would each be blowing toward each other. Never seen that before—maybe because their stadium is a bowl. I don’t know if it was just loose or the wind was that strong but the goalpost on TD Jesus side never seemed to move but the uprights on Jumbotron side moved significantly throughout the game.
This game was lost at the line of scrimmage. I was surprised they were able to run on our line that easily. Our inability to convert 3rd downs on offense sealed our fate. Don’t get me wrong, we deserved to lose, but their refs were crafty sonsobiches. I am very cognizant of little things like ball placement on down and distance especially in regards to forward progress. It seemed we were frequently NOT given the forward progress and they were. Once you make a call like receiver holding twice that backed us up on that first drive, I am watching to see if it is consistently called the rest of the night-it wasn’t. It was almost like the refs were making a statement from the get go. I recall thinking, if we could get these kind of calls at the beginning of our games against our all world D-Line when the are choke holding us we would blow people it. The most egregious no calls were against whoever was guarding Tyler Davis. When Tyler would blow past him, he instinctively would wrap his little arm around Tyler’s neck and hold on for dear life.
In spite of our loss, I don’t regret making the trip but I came away thinking Death Valley is the better football Gameday environment, especially if you have to play us at night.

I watched a couple of Tyler Davis Holds that would have been sacks and potentially swayed momentum back to us. Of course I've also watched that all year so apparently it's legal now.

We got back late last night and I agree with pretty much all of this as it relates to our experience as well. It was a bucket list campus and stadium and it did disappoint on Friday. I also agree I would rather have the game environment in Death Valley any time. We had a very nice older couple offer to walk around campus with us and the thing they told us that I found the most surprising was that they said the student enrollment was only about 9000 undergrads and about 3000 grad students. I thought the numbers would be much bigger. All that being said, aside from the game it was a great trip but now that I have seen it once, I don’t see a need to go back.

The professor they honored for the game was Fang Liu, whom they touted as a statistician of some sort excelling in data privacy (and so far I’m thinking this is a noble cause and a worthy thing to honor). But they go on to say, and I’m paraphrasing, something about her innovation in something they referred to as Differential Privacy which will make it harder for corporations to determine the gender of job applicants.

“My supposition is based on more of the student body reaction to things. For example, they voted on a Taylor swift song as the song they would like to be played to pump them up between the 3rd and 4th quarter. “
As far as the good professors use of her differential statistics I will admit I’ve come to not trust selective statistics. They tend to slight or persuade the musings of whomever is doing the selecting.

did you expect them to choose something from your generation, maybe louie, louie, or double shot of my babys love. They could have chosen a rap song from their generation and had half the language edited out i guess. Who thinks of taylor swifts songs as politically woke or revolutionary nor left wing or right wing.

Fat redneck fans to myself. • I don’t know what a Portland mustache is. • I didn’t notice any weird piercings or tattoos, probably because we were all wrapped up in coats and scarves due to 40mph winds.

worn by the students, although Indiana is Mike Pence country. The notre dame kids i saw were pretty nice and polite. There are no frats at notre dame so you surely didnt see gangs of drunk kids roaming around barfing and pissing everywhere. If that is the appearance of woke, then more power to them.

I know what you mean about ball placement . . .
Nov 7, 2022, 11:58 AM

there was one very easy to spot (haha-see what I did there!) instance in which the ball was spoted TWO YARDS behind the forward progress, resulting in a 3rd and 4 rather than 3rd and 2.
Yeah, I agree, the bad calls didn't swing this one. ND beat us fair and square. But it's frustrating to see b/c it can affect closer games.

The only time I've ever had an issue with any of their fans was during the monsoon game at Clemson when a group of inebriated, mouthy, classless BeeBee Heads sat in front of us.
I agree with you about the officials. While Collins should have been called for holding both times, there were several times when the ND defenders where doing as much if not worse and it wasn't called.

The holding calls very much sent a statement. I’ve been watching football my entire life and I’ve never seen back-to-back holding calls on a wide receiver. I knew we were gonna have to beat the officials to win that game, and maybe the team just gave up and said they’re not gonna call a fair game there’s no way to win. Probably not, but I’ve played lots of sports have been involved in an unfair foulfest in basketball and it does kill your spirit. I’m certain it didn’t help

We all know the old saying that holding can be called on every play. But when was the last time you saw it called on the first 2 plays of a game or 2 out of the first 3 or whatever it was? Definitely set the tone. Add to it ND only had one penalty in the first half and it was an obvious one right before halftime.

As a college football fan, ND was a “check the box” experience.
There isn’t one element, to me, that makes a repeat visit justified. I saw the sights, but from an overall football and weekend perspective, not one thing truly stood out to me.
South Bend is kind of a dump and a royal pain to get to, the tailgate felt more NFL than college, and the stadium experience is good, but not particularly special. The sound system is especially horrible. On top of that, the weather in the Midwest is always going to be questionable once the calendar turns to October.
There are several places I’d like to get back to, ND isn’t one of them. The trip made me very grateful to have what we have.

campus. But nothing there I'd need to come back to see. Visually, I liked the bowled in stadium.
Maybe the tailgating seemed sub-par because of the wind. I'm sure I leaned into several 50 MPH gusts...
Driving into South Bend - I did get the feeling that I was driving into Columbia.

I enjoyed checking this bucket list item off.
The campus is very nice. The stadium- meh. Bathroom lines were ridiculously long. I went only once.
The fans were almost all very welcoming and polite, almost A&M quality.
Glad I went except for the way the game turned out. I’m still stunned at how they pushed us around and how ill prepared we were especially after a bye.
Beat Louisville!!!!

First time to Notre Dame & probably last. Their Fans were ok no trash talking. Disappointed in Stadium as far as bathrooms, very few. Had to Walk a distance to find one. Only 1 score board Which was behind us, had to stand up & look Behind to see stats etc. And upset our band Was put in upper sections. Haven't seen this Before except at VA tech.

Tigernet is not political. This is not the venue to voice your biased opinions towards a group of people whom you've never met. To label them as "woke" demonstrates your inability to change with the times and be a free thinker which is one of the glorious fruits of attending college/university. Keep putting peanuts in your coca cola and lets stick to sports. GO Tigers!!!

Ehhh, not quite. I would say, generally, they are more affluent- many alumni and/or drawing from the professional and white collar ranks. This is not a crowd that you can compare apples to apples with any NFL fanbase.

My experience was similar but did not detect woke bias whatever that is. I’m also not Catholic, but their acknowledgment and honor of spiritual side of things was well done. I also loved their use of former players to speak to the crowd. They also honored their golf, fencing, cross country , and baseball teams very well. I’ve seen Touchdown Jesus, the golden dome, the grotto, library view of campus and bottom line is same- check that box on the bucket list and will never go back.

I’ve had less obnoxious fan experiences while wearing Clemson clothes in the sc student section of their stadiums. Loud mouth, highly antagonistic ######## were all around us . Seriously, last time I went to a game at UGA the fans were classier if you can believe that. Good trip otherwise… cool campus, beautiful sights…
