Major blow. Great OL line coach and super recruiter. Says he wants to get away from coaching and spend more time with family. Good for him!

That sounds like an excuse to get away from UGA, and he's willing to take a season off to do it without burning that bridge getting away from there. Kind of like Urban Meyer having serious heart problems when he wanted to leave a school!!!

It kind of makes you wonder if there is more to the story but I guess til we hear otherwise, we'll have to take him at his word. It is very unusual for someone of his reputation to just walk away from a major college coaching position this day and time.

Luke is 45 and pulling down 900k per year. For a guy this young raking in this much, I have to think there is more to the story. It would be nice to think the guy has all the money he needs and wants to spend time with his family. Hopefully is it isn't something more unfortunate....illness or something like that.

I wouldn't be surprised to see this sort of thing more and more from college coaches in general. Here's an excerpt from a Jan 18th interview of Kirby by Rece Davis where Smart talks about the strain of being a college football coach:
Smart has a whole different concern, though. The Georgia head football coach is incredible concerned about the mass number of coaches leaving the sport to go to the NFL.
“It worries me, I’ll be real honest honest with you, where the game of college football is going,” Smart told Rece Davis. “First concern I have: the best leaders and the best men to run it and be organized with it are leaving. Because you said relentless, the best coaches are going to the NFL because they get more time with their families.
“They want no part of NIL, portal, constant recruiting. And you say, ‘Well, why not?’ Go live it and see how long you wanna do it. It’s not what it used to be and I see coaches left and right, you know a lot of them, that have stepped out of this game that are saying, ‘I’m done.’ Good mean, great leaders, they don’t want to be apart of it. That concerns me for the future of it. Where’s it going?”
