That is so cool. My last duty station as a Marine Combat Engineer was at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort (SC). I became great friends with a lot of fighter pilots and to say the are a different breed would be a gross understatement. I have the greatest respect for them and their RIOs. Congratulations Major Butler on your retirement.

...and I freely admit that's what it is. But I thought that in order to be a Marine or Navy officer, you had to attend the U.S. Naval Academy. Unless he was in the reserves? (Not that there's anything at all wrong with that.) I don't recall Clemson having a Naval ROTC program when I was there (late 80's early 90's) I do recall they had Army and Air Force ROTC programs, but don't recall Navy.

They have OCS each summer for college students prospects. Or they used to anyway.

Marines can do Navy ROTC and as a "Marine Option"... except Clemson doesn't have a Navy ROTC unit (yet 😉).
Clemson guys, like myself, do either the Platoon Leaders Class (undergrad students) or Officer Candidates Course (seniors and graduates) where they're normal students during the school year and train at OCS in the summers (PLC) or after graduation (OCC).

MarineOneClemson is correct. The Marine Corps offers PLC (Platoon Leaders Class) to underclassman where they go to Quantico for training for two consecutive summers. Upon their graduation they are commissioned as a second lieutenant. Or you can go to OCS (Officers Candidate School) upon graduation which is what I did. I’m pretty sure that all officers go in as reserve officers and are later offered a regular commission. In Viet Nam my battalion commander called me back to out compound and wanted me to sign a regular commission. I told him I was planning on getting out when my obligation was over and did not sign it. To become a pilot you have to pass all the qualification tests and be accepted into flight school ……… darn hard to get in ……… even harder to become a Naval Aviator.

I think he was practising yesterday afternoon.
As I was leaving Harris-Teeter in downtown Greenville, I heard a roar and looked up to see an FA/18 come overhead at flight minimums. You can't mistake the sound of that beast!

One of the two pilots is a Clemson guy. The other is an Air Force Academy grad.
