Many of you are missing the main reason for expanding the playoff!

Dec 28, 2020, 12:01 AM

We don't need to expand it to insure the best team is crowned National Champion! The four team playoff is doing that now!.

The real reason for expanding the playoff is to get every power five conference involved every year, to increase the national interest! Whether it is a 6 or 8 team playoff really doesn't matter. With six teams, it's the five P5 champs and the highest ranked G5 conference champ. If it's an eight team playoff, add two at large, but make damm sure no conference can have both of the at large selections!

Why limit any one conference to no more than two teams in, you ask? Remember, the goal is to increase nationwide interest, and putting three in from a single conference is counter-productive to that!

If that conference sucks, why give free pass?

I don't understand why so few don't understand Dabo's philosophy which mean the entire year is a playoff. Just because you win your division with 3-4losses, then get lucky to beat your 2 loss division competitor don't mean you deserve a place in Playoffs. Big 12 stinks this year but 2 loss OK dont deserve a spot.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Doesnt matter how slim the odds are, it should NEVER happen

Dec 28, 2020, 8:56 AM

Thats why auto qualifiers should also NEVER happen.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I mean auto qualifiers would be pretty awesome. More like the NFL.

I get what you getting @. But, I disagree on Principle.

Dec 28, 2020, 1:02 AM

I fully and totally understand the reason folks like Herbstreit and others are saying college football has become stale because "the same teams keep going to the playoffs and winning championships"!
Having some west coast interest - some mid-west and north-east interest is huge. Texas! More "National Interest"! Better TV ratings!

I get all that.

But, I disagree about expansion still. The reason: "this thing isn't about more TV exposure or caring who is watching; in it's purist form it's supposed to be the best teams compete for the championship, period"! Sorry if routinely no west coast teams are included. Or no teams from the rust belt. Or anywhere North of Maryland. Sorry!
What it seems you are suggesting is inclusion not based on merit; but based on geographical location(conferences do that basically) and National TV marketing capability!
To me making a change because of that is a direct assault on the integrity of the game! CF would essentially be selling out to marketing and money grabbers!

If it's Clemson and Alabama for the next 20 straight years in "field hockey" I have to be honest - you would not have all this talk about expansion! It's all about "money" that folks want to expand the playoffs. CF has to decide if "it's all about the integrity of the sport or all about money"! If it sells it's soul for the cash - that will just be the first step into making it a minor league NFL.

Just my opinion! Probably not a popular one - but the way I see it @ OP.

Dec 28, 2020, 3:22 AM

The real reason is to go to more than 15 games so the lib press can make a better statement for paying plays. The side benefit is to guarantee more sEC B1G teams make the playoffs. No thanks.

I do think one of the requirements of making the four team playoff is winning a conference championship.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Many of you are missing the main reason for expanding the playoff!

Dec 28, 2020, 7:55 AM

The lib press doesn’t want or need a better argument for anything. They want to kill football because of toxic masculinity and winning and achievement hurts the little J school wimps’ feelings when it shows what losers they are.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Did you miss my caveat? No more than 2 teams from any conference!

Jan 1, 2021, 9:04 AM [ in reply to Re: Many of you are missing the main reason for expanding the playoff! ]

I absolutely don't won't to see it loaded up with SEC teams. As I mentioned in a previous post, I would be fine with a six team playoff, with no at-large teams! Five P5 champs and the top ranked G5 champs!

Re: Many of you are missing the main reason for expanding the playoff!

Dec 28, 2020, 3:30 AM

Regardless of whether or not the idea is to expand the playoffs is to get every power five conference involved ,why should a team from one of those conferences get in if they had the luxury of not having to play that extra conference championship game.
That is why A&M was left out.
Had Florida upset Bama and not lost to LSU, they might have a case for getting in,or OSU lost in the their title game But A&M had nothing to go with it.
You want expansion O.K. Do away with conference divisions have everybody play 10 games on a rotating schedule, add 1 FSB team(Furman or Citadel) and your intrastate rival.12 games, top 8 teams seeded 1-8 and play 1-8,2-7,3-6 and 4-5.
Have the higher seed host the opener, or use the 4 Major Bowl sites for the opening round then the National at another Major Bowl site(again on a rotating basis) .

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I believed from the start that the playoffs

Dec 28, 2020, 4:11 AM

would eventually expand to eight with the mechanics to do so highly subjective.

Mainly because I felt there would always be at least one of the P5 omitted, plus a number of borderline programs on the cusp screaming foul. Then, politics would take over.

I honestly believe this year's Committee knew they had to allow the B1G's participation despite fewer games played or else screaming would have erupted from at least two, maybe three, of the conferences.

Lastly, with all due respect to other programs I just can not fathom how anyone would expect a Coastal Carolina, Liberty, Cincinatti or others at their levels of play to be considered for the CFP, as it now exists. Rather, I believe the national titles need to be structured much as state division titles are. Lower level programs wanting to compete for the top ought to be able to apply and be considered for membership in the P5 conferences, which would require possible expansions and/or realignments.

Accomplishing my latter goals would be difficult IMO, simply because I don't believe the national leadership exists to organize and develop such.

Re: Many of you are missing the main reason for expanding the playoff!

Dec 28, 2020, 4:24 AM

This might be the dumbest thing I’ve ever read. Because college football needs to be promoted because it’s not popular enough. Seriously?

No. The purpose of the playoff is to have the two best teams playing for the championship. And that’s exactly what we have!

Money and TV and greed are ruining college football. Every sport is top-heavy and has dominant teams. It has always been that way and it will always be that way.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Many of you are missing the main reason for expanding the playoff!

Dec 28, 2020, 5:35 AM

The goal isn't to promote national interest.

I could reluctantly see 6......................5 Conference champions and 1 from the Group of 5.

And yes, there would be some weaker Conference champions.....BUT, the spot would be earned, not selected.

Go to 8 and the unintended consequences will be spilling all over the floor.

Dec 28, 2020, 1:18 PM [ in reply to Re: Many of you are missing the main reason for expanding the playoff! ]

Agree with this. The goal may be to get the four best teams in the CFP, but the end game is to have the two best teams in the Natty, with the best team winning.

No need to include everyone.

If everyone wants someone other than these four teams, they need to win more games, recruit better or get better coaches. Good luck.

You might as well put sanctions on how many four and five stars a team can sign per class. That would change it up. Let SCAR get a few and Vandy, maybe Georgia Southern.

You are correct. ESPN has been pushing the idea for 2-3 years, and we know they need money.

If teams are forced to play more games, look for more top players who are entering the draft to opt out.

While I am happy with the four team playoff and really don't want it to change from what we are witnessing with player opt outs i think will continue in the future with teams not in the playoffs making for difficulty in setting gambling lines and getting decent matchups for lesser bowls. Vegas may be the biggest reason actually.

Re: Many of you are missing the main reason for expanding the playoff!

Dec 28, 2020, 9:34 AM

It's only natural that most of ya'll see this from Clemson's current lofty perspective ("it's good to be King"). But the reality is that only 4 - 6 teams really compete for the 4 spots. It's a beauty competition. Look no further than this years selection of OSU. It's very difficult, if not impossible, for a "new" team to break through to gain a sport in the Playoffs. It's not good for the sport and the sport will die on the vine (or become a niche sport) unless the entire county has a stake in the outcome of the playoffs. Expanding to 8 would solve this problem. Look at the success of March Madness. Sure the same teams generally make the Final Four, but the entire country at least has a shot at being Cinderella.

Plus, even the NY6 Bowls not involved in the playoffs are now rendered to be meaningless exhibition games by the players. UNC has 4 of its best players opting out of the Orange Bowl and UGA has around 8. I would never imagine in a million years that players would consider a traditional NYD Bowl to be unimportant but that's where we are with the Playoffs dominating the post season.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Complete and total nonsense

Dec 28, 2020, 10:25 AM

Any P5 school that goes through unscathed will be in the playoff, period. So there are plenty of NEW schools that could be in. frankly, non-P5's shouldnt be in. As for your playoff making bowls meaningless - how? Those bowls all had the EXACT SAME meaning BEFORE the playoff - they were NEVER for the natty anyway, so how is it different now? Because of media hype? Again, the national title game got all the hype BEFORE the playoff. These are all just excuses for LOSERS who think they deserve to be included even though they didnt earn it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Complete and total nonsense

Dec 28, 2020, 11:02 AM

I never said, nor implied, that I (and probably most of us) felt NY6 Bowl Games are meaningless in the Playoff era. Heck, I'm going to Miami to watch the OB. The reality, however, is that today's players feel these are now meaningless exhibition games, hence the opt outs.

Saban predicted the downfall of the non playoff NYD bowls before the implementation of the 4 team playoffs.

Going undefeated in a P5 conference (including the championship game) is easier said than done. That can't be the sole criteria for a "new" team advancing to the playoffs. If Alabama, OSU or Clemson lose a game, then no problem, they're placed in the playoffs. Every other team in America, not so much.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thats pure conjecture on your part

Dec 28, 2020, 11:43 AM

If UNC had gone 10-1 this year with an ACC title, they would be in. Your suggestion is, they would not have, which is laughable. Had Clemson ended up not playing for the ACC title or had lost to Notre Dame in said title, they would have been out. To assume otherwise is equally laughable. The times Clemson still made the playoffs after losing a game were because A. Other teams ahead of them consequently lost and B. They ran the table after and won the ACC. The only place you may have a sliver of a point is that its much more difficult to move up the polls when you start ranked lowly or not at all. Then a loss hurts much more, but even then, a one loss ACC champ is likely in, unless there are somehow 4 other undefeated teams, which is improbable to say the least.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think Deptula made a valid point when he said the 4 team

Dec 28, 2020, 10:30 AM

playoff is becoming a self fulfilling prophecy.

All the best recruits want to be in the playoff, so they all go to Bama/Clemson/Ohio St. It keeps those at the top, at the top.

An 8 team playoff might spread that a bit, making it more interesting. It also would allow every team in America a path to a national championship. That should exist just on principle.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That sounds good.....on the surface

Dec 28, 2020, 10:43 AM

But recruits were already going to those schools BEFORE the playoff. Also, there are only so many top players to go around....the top 3 or 4 or 5 schools cant take them all. Further, you have to recruit, but also develop players. Thats how Clemson has become elite despite not typically signing a top 4 class.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Many of you are missing the main reason for expanding the playoff!

a point that has been made many times, and missed by most. The nation needs to get involved, just like March Madness. And yes, once in a while, a "David" will slay the giant. It happens. Just like in March.

Jan 1, 2021, 10:51 AM

If you expand and have auto bids I don't like the second order effects. Teams will not schedule tough out of conference games. With 4 teams we are getting the 2 best for the National Championship game and teams have to plan and work their schedule to show they are worth to get a bid.

This year's Alabama team is good but does anyone think they are as good as two years ago? The SEC defenses look like the Big12 from 2 years ago. I am curious to see if ND gets pressure on Jones today because he has looked like flag football highlights this year without any scrambling.

Keep the playoffs at 4 teams and ensure we get good games during the regular season out of conferenence.
