Louisville in the Atlantic...
Jun 4, 2013, 2:36 PM
|
|
Is an awesome thing IF they don't pull a Miami and start to suck when they join the ACC. I saw several posts a while back with people complaining about unbalanced divisions with Clemson, FSU, and UL all in the Atlantic. I for one love what it does for our SOS and it will only help us recruit better players the more often we are playing top 25 teams. If you are solid recruit, playing our 2015 schedule should get you pretty pumped up, for example (ND, FSU, Maimi, Louisville, and Scar). If those teams stay like they are now or improve, our SOS will be out of sight.
Go Tigers!!

Swoffie will put the academic clamps on them and their sports will take a hit.

agree... they'll benefit from the ACC relationship so long as Swofford doesn't require their players to be able to read.

they have never recruited particularly well in football

so not sure how many of the guys they would normally bring in would be kept out by new academic standards. You guys are giving UofL too much credit for not doing a whole lot, historically.

I think what excites people most about Louisville is their potential more so than their history.
They have a great young coach who has proven his loyalty to the school and isn't likely to leave for a better job.
They have a rich booster (papa john's) who is throwing gobs of money at the program.
They are spending alot of money to upgrade the stadium and other facilities.
Based solely on past recruiting, they are nowhere near a top team, but I think the potential is there IMO.

On top of what people have been saying here, they also had some really successful seasons during the Petrino era (and slightly before) before he left. To begin the millennium (2000-2007; 7 seasons), Louisville had 3 10+ win seasons in and 3 9+ win seasons.
It appears that Charlie Strong may be a top-level coach, and it also appears he really enjoys it at Louisville. There is potential for 3 routinely Top 10-15 teams to be in the Atlantic Division after they arrive.

UofL doesn't have the history of success Miami had

so there's plenty of reason to think they won't stay at the level of play they were at last year (and hadn't been near since Bobby Petrino was there, before which they were mediocre at best), while Miami falling off was a complete surprise.
As for the "unbalanced divisions," just a couple of years ago the Coastal was by far the better division. UNC (before all the suspensions) was a top 10- 15 team, GT had won 10 games two years in a row, Miami was looking good with Jacory Harris, and VT was the consistent 10 win program they normally have been. The Atlantic, by comparison, looked pitiful.

Just like pretty much anything else, division strength is cyclical.
Conference strength is cyclical historically; however, the $EC is on quite a run right now I must admit.

Paul had his best teams with Chan's old players and since that group left....Dwyer...Nesbitt...etc...he hasn't been able to recruit the difference makers. If GT left the Atlanta sports market there might be 4-5 people who would notice but that would be about it. They get no attn in town...they can't recruit with the big boys...they get the left over kids now. The other thing that's changed under Paul is the difference makers on defense aren't there....Chan put some kids in the NFL from the defensive side of the ball....Paul hasn't.

Winning tradition/history is only as relevant as the current

coach who is touting it. ND and Alabama are two prime examples of "winning tradition" who sucked for 10 years when the coaching wasn't right.
My point? Charlie Strong is a good coach. Combine that with a BCS win and a school committed to facilities and you've got the potential for a new winning tradition and the ability to recruit well.
I expect UL to stay relevant as long as Coach Strong is there.

wear ankle GPS devices, and it's taken them a number of years to get used to both finding students who aren't on work-release, and who can run without the extra pound on one leg. Louisville just has to deal with athletics, and if UNC can do it, anyone can.

It might help at the time and how does it help recruiting? Not many top notch recruits say, "I would really love to play against Louisville, that's one of the reasons why I chose to commit for (insert ACC school name here)".

Well it just depends on the situation. Louisville was a very good team in the early 2000s...if they return to that level and Florida State continues to improve, Clemson would be able to talk about playing Louisville, Florida State, and South Carolina each year, along with the potential to play Notre Dame, Miami, and Virginia Tech (depending on what kind of swing those last two are on).

"I would really love to play for Clemson! That's the sole reason I chose to commit," rather than having to continuously try and pimp out our conference's other members to gain favor. Our schedule and slate of competition coming up through this next decade plus is pretty stout.

So I am glad to see them in our division. Still, I would have rather traded them for FSU. We do not need an improved SOS. Especially with a conf. championship game, that is not an issue. Stronger competition only makes it less likely that we make the four team playoff in the end. Still, it will be nice to see Clemson at Papa John's stadium in 2015!

into the conference and haven't hesitated to reel off the "ACC ACC ACC" chants. I'm equally impressed with the loyalty shown to each other by LV and Coach Strong. Thank God the ACC seems to have gotten it right on this one....
